Other routes to reachieving filament separation have been described and rely on mechanical or aerodynamic forces to affect separation. Figure 4 illustrates one method which utilizes a rotating deflector plane to force the filaments apart while depositing the opened filaments ia overlapping loops (25). After the splayed filaments fall to the deposition surface or forming screen, a suction from below the disposition surface holds the fiber mass in place. 

The LT evaporator shown in Fig. 11-122/ is typical of those commonly used, especially for black hquor. Feed enters at the bottom of the tube and starts to boil partway up the tube, and the mixture of liquid and vapor leaving at the top at nigh velocity impinges against a deflector placed above the tube sheet. This deflector is effective both as a primary separator and as a foam breaker.

Scraper-Discharge Filter The filter medium is usually caulked into grooves in the drum grid, with cake removal facihtated by a scraper blade just prior to the resubmergence of the drum (Fig. 18-122). The scraper selves mainly as a deflector to direcl the cake, dislodged by an... 

The diameter should be sufficient to allow attenuation of the shock wave leaving the deflector plate. 

The diameter should be sufficient to allow installation of the pipes and deflector plates in such a way as not to interfere directly with one another (particularly important for vertical vessels). 

Each vent device discharge pipe is extended into the vessel and its end is fitted with a deflector device. This disperses the jet stream of solids (catalyst) and liquids discharged and dissipates this force, which should otheiwise be exerted on the vessel wall immediately opposite. 

The deflector device (baffle plate) must be carefully designed as described by Woods (Proc. Inst. Mech. Engrs. 180, part 3J 245-259, 1965-1966). 

Install a deflector shield to protect the area experiencing erosion. Note that shields could be clipped to the tubes themselves.
