Table 3.2 shows the 5 Cu and 5 Cc values of herbivores, omnivores, carnivores and humans. The (climate-corrected) trophic level effect between herbivores and carnivores is 0.90%o. Human values are closer to carnivore and omnivore values than to herbivore 5 Cc values. The human 5 Cc values are on average 0.66%o more positive than the herbivore 5 Cc values, a good estimate for a carnivore effect in humans (see section on trophic level effects, below). The average human 5 Cc value is -19.92 1.28%o,which would indicate that Holocene humans in Europe had a diet that consisted of C3 terrestrial foods, whieh is as might be expected. By looking at the humans separate from the total bone data set, we notice potential human food selection (Fig. 3.3) we can see a non-climatic pattern, which is much less uniform than in the total bone data set (Fig. 3.2b). Italy (6 Cc = -21.3%o) has a much more negative 8 Cc value than the Czech Republic (8 Cc =-18.7%o), Spain (8 Cc = -19.3%o) and Greece (-18.9%o but the 8 N of 9.0%odoes not indicate marine food), while the northern European coimtries are closer to a 5 Cc value of-20%o. What the actual causes are for this pattern in the human samples is not clear to better understand these variations it is best to consider, where possible, the 8 N values with the 8 Cc values. [Pg.54]

The model samples were prepared at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague (Czech Republic) in the summer of 2005. The samples, simulating the most typical ground layers used in the nineteenth century [34], were supplied for analysis as samples of unknown composition under the codes SI S10 (Table 6.3). [Pg.176]

A paper on the analysis for B in black, green, and fruit tea classes, ground roasted coffee beans, and instant coffees available in the Czech Republic has been authored by Krejcova and Cernohorsky [142]. Before analysis, sample preparation was performed by two methods total decomposition by means of an MW-assisted digestor and hot water extraction. The authors also assessed the effects of concomitant elements (Ca, Mg, K, and Na) and the presence of acids (HC1, HNO3) on B measurements. Mean concentration values for B ranged from 3.21 + 0.17 mg kg-1 in black teas to 21.3 + 0.7 mg kg-1 in instant coffee. [Pg.487]

Figure 6 Relationship between median, upper, and lower quartiles of Al, As, Be, Cd, Cu, Mn, Pb, and Zn, and pH in Czech Republic brooks in the late 1980s. Values were calculated after sorting the water samples n = 12,988) into groups with 0.2 pH unit ranges. Volume-weighted average concentrations in bulk precipitation (o) and throughfall ( ) in 1991 samples from the Bohemian Forest are shown (after Vesely and Majer, 1996, 1998). The declines of Be, Cd, Mn, and Zn at very low pH are likely caused by depletion of exchangeable trace metals from the watershed soils. Recently, the firm Applied Separation (Allentown, Pennsylvania), in cooperation with the Institute of Analytical Chemistry of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, developed commercial equipment similar to that from Dionex unlike this, however, it does not use a carousel to process samples in a sequential manner, but rather handles up to six samples simultaneously. [Pg.247]

HPLC-APCI-MS was applied to the analysis of PAHs of molecular masses 326, 350, and 374 amu in air particulate, zebra mussels, and coal tar from Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Better instmment response was obtained with 100% ACN in the mobile phase although 100% DCM was required to elute the highest molecular mass PAHs. LODs for B[a]P were 200 pg. PAHs with masses up to 450 amu were analyzed in air, water, and soil samples in an area surrounding a chemical plant that makes pitch black pellets in the Czech Republic. Extensive monitoring of drinking water quality from the public water supply in the Czech Republic showed the cadmium concentrations up to 200 p,g/l (geometric mean, 0.1 p.g/1). More than 60% of the 785 analyzed samples of the drinking water was below the tenth of the limit value for cadmium (5 p.g/1), and only 1.6% exceeded that value (National Institute of Public Health in Prague, 1997). [Pg.98]

The results of the project of National Institute of Public Health, Prague, The Health Risk Assessment of Dietary Exposures to the Selected Chemical Substances (Total Diet Study), Czech Republic, 1994 are presented in Table 14 (National Institute of Public Health in Prague, 1995b). In this study 552 composite food samples were analyzed representing 1920 individual commodities from 12 sites of the Czech Republic. No statistically significant difference was found between individual sites with a different environmental pollution level. The estimated exposure dose for the Czech Republic ranges between 28 and 41% of the PTWI. [Pg.99]
