The obvious problem with this discussion is that it is circular - that encystment does occur and thus significantly decreases the size of motile cell populations. Low or nonexistent wintertime concentrations of tamarensis may thus reflect either a low probability of survival or the removal of many motile cells by cyst formation and deposition. 

For example, decreasing either temperature or light intensity alone has not successfully induced sexuality in tamarensis cultures (26). In fact, if temperature is dropped from optimal levels to that where growth rate begins to decrease ( 12°C), cyst formation is actually inhibited under low nutrient conditions that typically induce sexuality.

Prenatal cocaine exposure has been associated with subependymal hemorrhage and subependymal cyst formation in term neonates and more recently in preterm neonates (<36 weeks of gestation) (325). Medical records and cranial sonograms obtained during 1 year on 122 premature infants showed an increased incidence of subependymal cysts in preterm cocaine-exposed infants (8 of 18) compared with non-exposed infants (8 of 99). There was no increase in the incidence of major structural abnormalities. All subependymal cysts resolved by 4 months of age. The authors noted that the neurodevelop-mental implications of such cyst formation are unknown. 

The drug can also be used concomitantly with echo-thiophate to prevent the formation of miotic cysts during treatment of open-angle glaucoma or accommodative esotropia. Addition of the 2.5% concentration to the echothiophate regimen is recommended. The mechanism whereby phenylephrine prevents cyst formation is not known. However, inhibition of the intense miosis may account, at least in part, for the beneficial effect.
