Enby 6 is an example of a stereospecific elimination reaction of an alkyl halide in which the transition state requires die proton and bromide ion that are lost to be in an anti orientation with respect to each odier. The diastereomeric threo- and e/ytAra-l-bromo-1,2-diphenyl-propanes undergo )3-elimination to produce stereoisomeric products. Enby 7 is an example of a pyrolytic elimination requiring a syn orientation of die proton that is removed and the nitrogen atom of the amine oxide group. The elimination proceeds through a cyclic transition state in which the proton is transferred to die oxygen of die amine oxide group. 

Amine oxide pyrolysis occurs at temperatures of 100°-150°C. The reaction can proceed at room temperature in DMSO.323 If more than one type of (3-hydrogen can attain the eclipsed conformation of the cyclic TS, a mixture of alkenes is formed. The product ratio parallels the relative stability of the competing TSs. Usually more of the /f-alkene is formed because of the larger steric interactions present in the TS leading to the Z-alkene, but the selectivity is generally not high. 

Like amine oxide elimination, selenoxide eliminations normally favor formation of the E-isomer in acyclic structures. In cyclic systems the stereochemical requirements of the cyclic TS govern the product composition. Section B of Scheme 6.21 gives some examples of selenoxide eliminations. 

In order to overcome these two issues, we reversed the order of the reaction sequence, as summarized in Scheme 1.20. We took advantage of the alcohol functional group in 50. Oxidation ofpMB of 50 with DDQ proceeded smoothly to form cyclic aminal 52 (as a mixture of a and P = 11.5 1) in toluene at 0-10 °C. The resulting DDQH, which is insoluble in toluene, was filtered off, and isolated DDQH could be recycled as we demonstrated in the Proscar process (see p. 92) [32]. Thus, this process minimizes the impact to the environment from an oxidizing reagent. Cyclic aminal 52 was solvolyzed with NaOH in MeOH at 40 °C. The resulted anisaldehyde was reduced in situ to pMBOH 43 by addition of NaBH4 and the desired amino alcohol 53 was isolated by direct crystallization from the reaction mixture, upon neutralization with acetic acid, in 94% yield and >99.9% ee after crystallization from toluene-heptane. 

Oxidation of amines to nitrones.1 Secondary amines can be oxidized to nitrones by 30% H202 in the presence of a catalytic amount of Se02. The reaction is applicable to acyclic and cyclic amines. The products can be used without isolation in 1,3-dipolar cycloadditions. 

Oxidative attack on a carbon-hydrogen bond of an alkyl group a to a nitrogen atom is not restricted to saturated aliphatic amines. In fact X in an X-N-CH- structural subunit can be virtually any common atomic grouping that can be found in stable organic molecules. For example, w-carbon hydrogens of Aralkyl-substituted aromatic cyclic amines (119), aryl amines (120), amides (121), amidines (122), A-nitrosodialkylamines (123), etc. are all subject to oxidative attack, carbinolamine formation, and in most cases release of an aldehyde or ketone depending on the substitution pattern (1° or 2°)... 

Qualitative spot tests for aldehydes, in the presence of ketones, are generally only reliable for water-soluble compounds. This problem can be overcome by the use of 4-amino-3-hydrazino-5-mercapto-1,2,4-triazole (Purpald , Aldrich Chemical Company) in the presence of Aliquat (Scheme 5.27). Under aerial oxidation, the initially formed colourless cyclic adduct changes colour through red to purple. The colourless cyclic aminal can also be formed by ketones, but only the adducts derived from the aldehydes are oxidized to the purple bicyclic aromatic system [28]. Weakly electrophilic aldehydes, e.g., 4-methoxybenzaldehyde, reacts slowly, but will give the positive coloration upon gentle heating to ca. 70°C for one or two minutes. 

The only cationic surfactant (Fig. 23) found in any quantity in the environment is ditallow dimethylammonium chloride (DTDMAC), which is mainly the quaternary ammonium salt distearyldimethylammonium chloride (DSDMAC). The organic chemistry and characterization of cationic surfactants has been reported and reviewed [330 - 332 ]. The different types of cationic surfactants are fatty acid amides [333], amidoamine [334], imidazoline [335], petroleum feed stock derived surfactants [336], nitrile-derived surfactants [337], aromatic and cyclic surfactants [338], non-nitrogen containing compounds [339], polymeric cationic surfactants [340], and amine oxides [341]. 

In an another analogous set of reactions, Matsumura and coworkers have shown that electrochemically derived A -acyliminium ions can serve as electrophiles in asymmetric alkylation reactions (Scheme 25) [57]. In this case, the methoxycarbamate of a series of cyclic amines was oxidized in order to generate the AZ-a-methoxy carbamates.

Amino methyl substituted pyrrolo-benzodiazepine 215 forms a cyclic aminal with aldehydes that can be further oxidized with Mn02 to fused 3-substituted imidazole 216. Alternatively, cyclic imine 217 can be submitted to TosMlC cycli-zation to afford unsubstituted 9H-benzo[e]imidazo[5,l-c]pyrrolo[l,2-fl][l,4]-diazepine 218 (Scheme 45, Section 3.1.1.2 (1993JHC749)). 

The oxidation by amine oxides provides a basis for selection among non-equivalent groups on boron. In acyclic organoboranes, the order of reaction is tertiary > secondary > primary. In cyclic boranes, stereoelectronic factors dominate. With 9-BBN derivatives, for example, preferential migration of a C—B bond which is part of the bicylic ring structure occurs. 

Reaction with a cyclic amine in the presence of a base and at ambient temperature forms alkene. Thus, nitrosyl chloride reacts with aziridine to form ethylene and nitrous oxide ... 

Secondary amines (dialkylamines, benzyl tort-butyl amines and cyclic amines) can be oxidized to the nitrones using hydrogen peroxide in the presence of catalysts like Na2W04 or SeOi (equation 74)". ... 

The aminolysis of dibenzo[l,2]oxathiin 6-oxide 10 with primary and secondary amines in water was quantitively followed by the absorption at 270 nm in UV spectroscopy, from which the reaction was found to obey pseudo-first-order kinetics < 1999TL8901 >. Because of the lack of a distinct difference in the magnitude of y obs between primary and secondary amines, and between acyclic and cyclic amines, the aminolysis reaction must proceed in two steps the first is a fast formation of intermediate 102 followed by a second slow decomposition step to the reaction product 103 (Scheme 24).
