Pediatric PTSD is a psychiatric disorder that is prone to both under- and overdiagnosis, especially when assessments are superficially or inexpertly conducted. For example, a traumatic exposure history in combination with current externalizing behavioral symptoms does not necessarily imply a diagnosis of PTSD. Conversely, children who present with an externalizing behavioral disorder in conjunction with anxiety symptoms and aggression are often not fully evaluated for PTSD. [Pg.582]

Procedures a corporate environmental advisory council (CEAC) was formed in 1991 to help think through the EH S policies. The names of the chair and nine current external members of the council are included in the report. Supporting the policy are six codes of management practice covering the areas of ... [Pg.193]

The ( a — Ec) term can be reduced by applying a cathodic current to the corroding sample so that its potential at least reaches the equilibrium potential of the anode E, where the corroding electrode is cathodically protected. It is necessary to apply an additional current to ensure that the potential is a few millivolts more negative that the a value to achieve complete protection from corrosion. Cathodic protection can be achieved by applying the current externally or by coupUng the specimen of interest to sacrificial anodes of metals such as Al, Mg, Zn. These principles are illustrated in Fig. 14.9. [Pg.1309]

External Cardioversion or Defibrillation. The energy surge from direct current external cardioversion or defibrillation has the potential to damage the pulse generator or cause a bum at the electrode-tissue interface due to flow of current through the leads (69,70). Protective measures, such as serially placed... [Pg.585]

Firmer evidence of bone Pb mobility evolved with use of stable Pb isotope ratio analyses, where historical (bone) Pb in the body isotopically distinct from current, external Pb intakes can be employed to estimate endogenous, bone Pb contributions to current PbB under both (near) steady-state conditions and metabolic disturbances of steady state. Manton (1985), in an early use of the approach, noted that for two subjects, bone Pb contributed 70% of measured PbB over a 9-year period. Gulson et al. (1995, 1997, 1998, 1999) carried out a series of studies with Australian immigrants having bone Pb isotopic profiles different from the Pb absorbed from their new sources. Female subjects were smdied prepregnancy and during pregnancy and lactation. [Pg.266]

Professor M. N. G. Dukes is a physician and international lawyer who has worked in pharmaceutical research management, pubhc health, and development aid. In all the cells described so far, the source of the energy which makes a cell active has been within the cell. However, in stray current cells the energy comes from an electrical current external to the corrosion site per se. The source of energy for such cells may be a distant generator, a direct-current transmission line, a cathodic protection rectifier on some other line, a street car system, or an electric railway (Fig. 7.29). [Pg.237]

Ship-shaped FPSOs must be designed to weather vane i.e. must have the ability to rotate in the direction of wind or current. This requires complex mooring systems and the connections with the well heads must be able to accommodate the movement. The mooring systems can be via a single buoy or, in newer vessels designed for the harsh environments of the North Sea, via an internal or external turret. Figure 10.33 shows a schematic of the Shell-BP Foinaven FPSO. [Pg.266]

In contrast to a direct injection of dc or ac currents in the sample to be tested, the induction of eddy currents by an external excitation coil generates a locally limited current distribution. Since no electrical connection to the sample is required, eddy current NDE is easier to use from a practical point of view, however, the choice of the optimum measurement parameters, like e.g. the excitation frequency, is more critical. Furthermore, the calculation of the current flow in the sample from the measured field distribution tends to be more difficult than in case of a direct current injection. A homogenous field distribution produced by e.g. direct current injection or a sheet inducer [1] allows one to estimate more easily the defect geometry. However, for the detection of technically relevant cracks, these methods do not seem to be easily applicable and sensitive enough, especially in the case of deep lying and small cracks. [Pg.255]

The method of eddy currents allows to evaluate own stress very precisely, as well as those caused in effect of external loading. The use of the contact probe with a 10,00 mm diameter allows to for precise evaluation of stress in different control point of objects. [Pg.387]

The tliree conservation laws of mass, momentum and energy play a central role in the hydrodynamic description. For a one-component system, these are the only hydrodynamic variables. The mass density has an interesting feature in the associated continuity equation the mass current (flux) is the momentum density and thus itself is conserved, in the absence of external forces. The mass density p(r,0 satisfies a continuity equation which can be expressed in the fonn (see, for example, the book on fluid mechanics by Landau and Lifshitz, cited in the Furtlier Reading)... [Pg.722]

Historically, the first and most important capacitance method is the vibrating capacitor approach implemented by Lord Kelvin in 1897. In this technique (now called the Kelvin probe), the reference plate moves relative to the sample surface at some constant frequency and tlie capacitance changes as tlie interelectrode separation changes. An AC current thus flows in the external circuit. Upon reduction of the electric field to zero, the AC current is also reduced to zero. Originally, Kelvin detected the zero point manually using his quadrant electrometer. Nowadays, there are many elegant and sensitive versions of this technique. A piezoceramic foil can be used to vibrate the reference plate. To minimize noise and maximize sensitivity, a phase-locked... [Pg.1894]

The most useful direct modulation teclmique is the current gain switching of semiconductor laser devices. This technique is unique to semiconductor sources, nearly all other lasers are modulated externally. In tliese devices tire excitation current of tire laser is modulated, resulting in modulated gain and tlierefore modulated output power. A detailed analysis of tliis process is found in [27]. Simply put, an oscillating current of tire fonn... [Pg.2872]

When the e.m.f. of a cell is measured by balancing it against an external voltage, so that no current flows, the maximum e.m.f. is obtained since the cell is at equilibrium. The maximum work obtainable from the cell is then nFE J, where n is the number of electrons transferred, F is the Faraday unit and E is the maximum cell e.m.f. We saw in Chapter 3 that the maximum amount of work obtainable from a reaction is given by the free energy change, i.e. - AG. Hence... [Pg.102]

Electrochemical methods covered in this chapter include poten-tiometry, coulometry, and voltammetry. Potentiometric methods are based on the measurement of an electrochemical cell s potential when only a negligible current is allowed to flow, fn principle the Nernst equation can be used to calculate the concentration of species in the electrochemical cell by measuring its potential and solving the Nernst equation the presence of liquid junction potentials, however, necessitates the use of an external standardization or the use of standard additions. [Pg.532]

The graph of Figure 6.8 illustrates the effect of increasing voltage on the electric current between two electrodes immersed in a gas. The circuit is completed by an external resistance, used to limit the current flow. As shown in Figure 6.8, the discharge can be considered in regions, which are described below. [Pg.39]
