A process variable is a parameter of the current status of a process under operation, and, therefore, the measurement of process variables is a key to understanding what is happening in a bioreactor and to being able to control the process. Most of the sensors used for the measurements of process variables are inserted into the culture broth of a bioreactor. These must have qualities that will allow them to be repeatedly sterihzed (autoclavable) in order to prevent microbial contamination in bioreactors. Naturally, all the sensors must be calibrated before sterihzation.

In summary, the Ravello NATO ASI was a very special workshop which we remember as an intense but collegial scientific discussion, a forum for interaction among individuals from broadly different cultures and languages, and the reinforcement or initiation of cameraderie which continues. We hope that this volume reflects all of these aspects, provides current status reports in diversified fields, and, most significantly, acts as a benchmark for the discipline of organic synthesis as it surveys and reaches towards its central contributions in the 21st Century.

Measurement of safety culture—It is critical that organizations have reliable and valid ways in which to measure their safety culture if they are to develop and sustain it appropriately. Organizations need to continuously know and undmtand the current status of their safety culture. This involves the continuous assessment of their safety culture, which typically involves assessing the safety-related attitudes and perceptions of their workers at all levels of the organization.

As mentioned earlier, determining an accident trend analysis should be relatively easy. In principle, at least, it is easy, or it should be however, a variety of obstacles will probably be encountered when trying to determine the current status of safety culture. In the initial chapters, we discussed how an OSHA log can be a guide to potential problem areas. OSHA logs, accident reports, incident investigations, accident review boards, medical records, worker interviews, OSHA citations, and other information can provide a lot of information about safety culture development. 

Corporate culture (customs and courtesies) - An organization s culture, both in the private and public sectors, plays an integral role in the overall performance of its members and the products they produce. The customs and courtesies within the culture significantly influence individual behavior. Individuals adjust their behavior according to the ebb and flow of these customs and courtesies, which change with the turnover of managers and supervisors. The drift occurs as an individual s behavior adapts to the current status of safety with a bias toward reverting to the habits of the past. 

When new technologies are not available to all members of a society, they can exacerbate existing inequalities in the system of medical care. Currently the structure of the U.S. health care system is fundamentally flawed. Racial and ethnic disparities in health status and health care, more than 40 million uninsured, spiraling health care costs, and inadequate levels of culturally competent medical care are all evidence of this problem. 

Routine observation of cultured is usually carried out by phase contrast microscopy, utilizing the inverted phase contrast microscope. More recently, more detailed observations have become possible utilizing fluorescent tags and inverted fluorescent microscopes. Fluorescent tags currently in use permit the assessment of oxidant status and mitochondrial function as well as the intracellular concentration of sulfhydryl groups, Ca2+,H+,Na+, andK+. 

Thus there is a need for further experimental work to assess the relationship between the pigment composition of P. antarctica and dissolved iron concentrations as a function of irradiance. To this end, we are currently undertaking the analysis of pigment samples from iron-addition culture experiments conducted at irradiances > 20 nE m 2 s In addition, there are other factors that may limit the utility of pigment ratios such as Fuco Hex in assessing the physiological status and/or ambient growth conditions of... 

However fascinating is the history of cacao, its acceptance in our current practical lives scarcely gives due credit to the exalted status it enjoyed in the ancient Central American cultures. Social custom and traditions passed over into and shaped its acceptance in our European culture, and in many countries it still constitutes an expensive luxury. Poetry and music, as esthetic forms of literature, have not neglected cacao and chocolate as themes. However, commercial exploitation and technological advances in agriculture and the manufacturing and processing arts and sciences constitute the major portion of our literature on this subject today. 

It would be remiss if not impossible to discuss the status of antimalarial drug therapy without referring to natural products. Since the disease we call malaria has been recognized for millennia, a great number of plant species have been identified by various cultures as having antimalarial properties. While it is surely not possible to substantiate all of these claims in terms of modem therapeutic efficacy, it is certain that current antimalarial therapy consists substantially of natural products and related derivatives. 

One approach to recovery of useful plant metabolites such as rosmarinic acid is to extract plants as they are currently produced. Unfortunately the agronomic conditions for production of such plants are extremely variable. Unreliable cultivation, harvesting, shipping techniques, infestation with pests and natural status of the plant can all impart the lost of the product produced by the plant (6). Changes in any of these conditions can adversely influence the production of compounds such as rosmarinic acid. The application of modem culturing of plant cells offers an alternative means of production. Conditions of culturing can be optimized such that a cell culture would produce rosmarinic acid on a continuous basis at high yield and in a form where it can be easily extracted (7).
