Cross steaming

Hot air, steam, and hot water vulcanisation is widely used in the latex industry, and fluid-bed heat transfer and electronic microwave curing has also been used. Cross-linking by electron radiation has been experimentally used, but has not yet been developed commercially. 

Resin Cure. Resin cure systems yield carbon—carbon cross-links and, consequendy, thermally stable materials. Butyl mbber vulcanised with resins are used as tire-curing bladders, and have a life of 300—700 curing cycles at steam temperature of 175°C at about 20 m/cycle. 

Whereas polyisobutylene and butyl mbber exhibit chain cleavage on free-radical attack, halobutyls, particulady bromobutyl and CDB, are capable of being cross-linked with organic peroxides. The best cure rate and optimal properties are achieved using a suitable co-agent, such as y -phenjiene bismaleimide. This cure is used where high temperature and steam resistance is required. 

PAFC systems are commercially available from the ONSI Corporation as 200-kW stationary power sources operating on natural gas. The stack cross sec tion is 1 m- (10.8 ft"). It is about 2.5 m (8.2 ft) tall and rated for a 40,000-h life. It is cooled with water/steam in a closed loop with secondary heat exchangers. The photograph of a unit is shown in Fig. 27-66. These systems are intended for on-site power and heat generation for hospitals, hotels, and small businesses. Another apphcation, however, is as dispersed 5- to 10-MW power plants in metropolitan areas. Such units would be located at elec tric utihty distribution centers, bypassing the high-voltage transmission system. The market entiy price of the system is 3000/kW. As production volumes increase, the price is projec ted to dechne to 1000 to 1500/kW. 

The third process for cross-linking is the Sioplas process developed by Dow. The first stage of this involves the grafting of an easily hydrolysable trialkoxyvinylsilane onto the polyethylene chain, the site activation having been achieved with the aid of a small amount of peroxide. The compound is then extruded onto the wire, which is collected on a drum. The drum is then exposed to hot water, or, more commonly, low-pressure steam. The water hydrolyses the alkoxy groups, which then condense to form a siloxane cross-link. ...
