Cross-linking results

Poly(methyl methacrylate) and poly(vinyl acetate) precipitate from the resin solution as it cures. This mechanism offsets the contraction in volume as the polyester resin cross-links, resulting in a nonshrinking thermoset. Other polymer additives such as poly(butylene adipate) provide similar shrinkage... [Pg.322]

Radioiodinated derivatives have been prepared to define more closely the target site of a-conotoxins on the acetylcholine receptor (R. Myers, unpublished data). In membrane preparations from Torpedo electroplax, photoactivatable azidosalicylate derivatives of a-conotoxin GIA preferentially label the p and 7 subunits of the acetylcholine receptor. However, when the photoactivatable derivative is cross-linked to detergent solubilized acetylcholine receptor (AChR), only the 7 subunit is labeled. Since snake a-neurotoxins mainly bind to the a subunits of AChR and a-conotoxins compete directly with a-bungarotoxin, the cross-linking results above are both intriguing and problematic. [Pg.271]

The IR spectra of thin films from an alternating copolymer of tri-n-butyl-stannyl methacrylate and maleic anhydride at various stages of UV irradiation were also studied l09). It can be expected that cross-linking results in hindered rotational and oscillatory mobility of the backbone chain and of side chains in the macromolecule. Indeed, a decrease in the peak intensity of most absorption bands is observed in the IR spectra of an irradiated copolymer 1770 and 1840 cm-1 (vc=0 anhydride), 1406 cm-1 (Sq, in CH2—Sn), 1285 and 1080 cm-1 (vc 0 c), 1115, 850, 750cm-1, etc. At the same time, there is an increase in the intensity of absorption bands near 1720 (vc=0 in — COOSnR3) and 1580 cm-1 (vc Q in -C=Q... SnRa). [Pg.133]

At high concentration of antigen and at an immature developmental stage of B cells BCR cross-linking results in apoptosis (Norvell et al., 1995). In many cells SHIP mediated degradation of Ptdins polyphosphates promotes... [Pg.317]

It is essential to note that cross-linking results are indicative that por-... [Pg.39]

There are three types of cross-linking one is chemical and two physical. Physical cross-linking results from formation of crystalline regions within polymer structures and from chain entanglement. Cross-linked materials have good dimensional memory. Chemically cross-linked materials do not dissolve and do not melt. [Pg.45]

It should be noted that the presence of cross-links results in the partial or complete loss of control over the size of the polymer molecules, even if the living character of the polymerization can sometimes be preserved. Incidently, one of the characteristics of MIPs is that they are cross-linked polymers. This cross-linking is necessary in order to maintain the conformation of the three-dimensional binding sites obtained through the molecular imprinting process, and thus the ability of the polymer to recognize specifically and selectively its target molecule. Nevertheless, even with cross-linked polymers, the use of CRP methods may be beneficial, as it can, up to a certain point, improve the structure of the polymer matrix. Indeed, all of the above CRP methods have been applied to MIPs. [Pg.12]

As mentioned in the preceding section, when vinyl or other alkenyl groups are present as substituents, photolysis leads to cross-linking, which dominates over chain scission. Probably the cross-linking results when silyl radicals formed in the initial photolysis add to vinyl carbon atoms on neighboring chains, but other mechanisms are also possible. [Pg.235]

Suppose the network is ideal, with N chain units between cross- links, while the initial dimensions are Zx° Zy° and lz (Figure 5.2). The network is then deformed to the dimensions lx, ly, lz. Statistical calculation of the number of possible chain conformations between the cross-links results, with S = k ln W, in ... [Pg.87]

The zinc species (such as, zinc chloride and zinc hydroxychloride) in the condensed phase can alter the pyrolysis chemistry by catalyzing the dehydrohalogenation and promoting cross-linking, resulting in increased char formation and a decrease in both smoke production and flaming combustion. [Pg.231]
