Crack micro-cracking

Luty W. Modem views on nucleation of fatigue micro-cracks in roiling bearings MOC IMP No 6, 1973,... [Pg.24]

It is possible to expect that the endurance at the fixed loading allows to exclude the component AEl, because the development of prevailing defect is continuing, and numerous initiation of stable micro-cracks outside the zone are excepted. [Pg.84]

Fig. 4 X-ray refraction topography of a polystyrene sample with highly oriented micro cracks induced by strain in vertical direction. Fig. 4 X-ray refraction topography of a polystyrene sample with highly oriented micro cracks induced by strain in vertical direction.
The refractograp of figure 4 shows highly oriented micro cracks of a polystyrene sample. The orientation of the cracks is perpendicular to the mechanical strain direction. The X-ray refracted intensitiy can be interpreted as crack density, i.e. the inner surfaces within a unit volume. Changing the tilt angle (of polystyrene and polystyrene blend samples) with respect to the primary beam leads to significantly different distributions of crack orientation (Fig. 5). [Pg.560]

Iridium Oxide. Iridium dioxide [12030 9-8] coatings, typically used in combination with valve metal oxides, are quite similar in stmcture to those of mthenium dioxide coatings. X-ray diffraction shows the mtile crystal stmcture of the iridium dioxide scanning electron micrographs show the micro-cracked surface typical of these thermally prepared oxide coatings. [Pg.121]

Micro-mechanical processes that control the adhesion and fracture of elastomeric polymers occur at two different size scales. On the size scale of the chain the failure is by breakage of Van der Waals attraction, chain pull-out or by chain scission. The viscoelastic deformation in which most of the energy is dissipated occurs at a larger size scale but is controlled by the processes that occur on the scale of a chain. The situation is, in principle, very similar to that of glassy polymers except that crack growth rate and temperature dependence of the micromechanical processes are very important. [Pg.236]

The case is different again under micro-discontinuous (i.e. micro-cracked or micro-porous) chromium, on which a definite improvement in corrosion resistance can be achieved when copper is present under the nickel coating . [Pg.520]

Microcracked chromium topcoats Historically, microcracked chromium preceded the micro-porous chromium just described, but it is related to it in that the deposition conditions and thickness of the chromium topcoat are controlled to give porosity through a network of very fine cracks. [Pg.529]

Supplemental films The Batelle Memorial Institute has developed a post-treatment for nickel plus chromium coatings in which the plated part is made cathodic in a solution containing dichromate. A film thereby formed on the surface seals pores in the coating through which corrosion of the nickel might otherwise occur. Later work suggests, however, that micro-cracked chromium gives superior results. [Pg.530]

In order to supplement micro-mechanical investigations and advance knowledge of the fracture process, micro-mechanical measurements in the deformation zone are required to determine local stresses and strains. In TPs, craze zones can develop that are important microscopic features around a crack tip governing strength behavior. For certain plastics fracture is preceded by the formation of a craze zone that is a wedge shaped region spanned by oriented micro-fibrils. Methods of craze zone measurements include optical emission spectroscopy, diffraction... [Pg.299]

Another major drawback of polysaccharides is their hydrophilic nature leading to low degrees of adhesion between fiber and matrix [11]. Moisture absorption takes place by three types of mechanisms namely diffusion, capillarity, and transport via micro cracks [2]. Among the three, diffusion is considered to be the major mechanism. Water absorption largely depends on the water-soluble or hygroscopic components embedded in the matrix, which acts as a semipermeable membrane. While, fiber/matrix adhesion and fiber architecture also affect the moisture absorption. The results of the water sorption experiment showed an interesting trend. The extent of water uptake was not very significant and also did not increase linearly with amount of filler (Table-2). [Pg.122]

The mechanism of the EEF polarity dependence of the micro-bubble emerging is believed to be that the electrolysis of water molecules absorbed plays an important role. The deposited Cr layer is susceptible to be oxidized, and cracks tend to form and propagate due to the interfacial stress between the oxidized film and the glass disk, resulting in the damage of the electrode. [Pg.60]

Detection Capability Can detect HTHA only after cracks have formed. Cannot detect microscopic damage. Can detect and distinguish microfissuring and micro voids due to HTHA from other indications very reliably. Can detect HTHA only after macro size cracks have formed. Cannot detect microscopic damage. Blisters are readily apparent when present. However, HTHA may frequently occur without the formation of surface blisters. Reported to be capable of detecting cracks. Currently not known whether microscopic damage can be detected. [Pg.55]

The development of composite micro/mesoporous materials opens new perspectives for the improvement of zeolytic catalysts. These materials combine the advantages of both zeolites and mesoporous molecular sieves, in particular, strong acidity, high thermal and hydrothermal stability and improved diffusivity of bulky molecules due to reduction of the intracrystalline diffusion path length, resulting from creation of secondary mesoporous structure. It can be expected that the creation of secondary mesoporous structure in zeolitic crystals, on the one hand, will result in the improvement of the effectiveness factor in hydroisomerization process and, on the other hand, will lead to the decrease of the residence time of products and minimization of secondary reactions, such as cracking. This will result in an increase of both the conversion and the selectivity to isomerization products. [Pg.413]

In the cracking of benzene to acetylene over alumina- and silica-supported nickel catalysts it was observed that the selectivity of the reaction, expressed as the ethyne/ ethene ratio, was dramatically affected (from 1 9 to 9 1) by controlling the micro-wave energy input (i. e. 90% selectivity) [83]. [Pg.361]
