Counseling strategies

Databases differ in their strengths and weaknesses, as well as in their focus. As a result, dupHcate searches carried out on different databases generally produce different results. This has been demonstrated in comparative studies of retrieval results for a group of patent databases (31,32). Participants in one study (31) made an effort to develop optimal search strategies in each database tested, yet in no instance did one file produce perfect retrieval. Both investigations (31,32) found that results from the various databases complemented each other. As a result, searchers are counseled to use multiple databases whenever possible. There is no pat answer to the question of how many files to use or which files to use however, more files mean more expenditure, and searchers must develop their own cost—benefit relationship. 

All tobacco users should be assessed for their readiness to quit and appropriate strategies implemented. Those who are ready to quit should be treated with a combination of counseling on behavioral and cognitive strategies and... 

Though previous literature suggests several prevention strategies, a combination of efforts may be more advisable. Alteration in sexual behavior should undoubtedly be the first counseling concern, as promiscuous sexual activity has been shown to augment the probability of infection. 

Early detection of HIV infection is vital in controlling its spread however, individuals in resource-limited settings feel they have no reason to find ouf about their HIV status if there are no treatment interventions. The availability of freafmenf will acf as an incentive for these individuals to seek testing and counseling. There is also a strong need to create and sustain a medical and public health infrastructure in the developing world and also scale up proven prevention strategies. 

Implication for Practice. If substantiated in a larger study, this represents an opportunity for professional counseling organizations, teacher organizations and other relevant stakeholders to develop intervention strategies. Moreover, counselors and teachers should make special efforts to assist African American students in understanding the relationship between their education and anticipated careers. This also represents an opportunity for chemists and other scientists to serve as volunteers in both formal (schools) and informal STEM educational... 

Finally, as noted earlier, comorbid substance abuse, particularly with bipolar male patients, is a strong predictor of suicide-related lethality. It is critically important to recognize these complicating disorders and aggressively intervene with appropriate clinical strategies. Referral to Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), Narcotics Anonymous (NA), and other related counseling support programs, as well as prescription of naltrexone (Revia) in the appropriate patients, may also help to diminish the risk of serious morbidity (see also the section The Alcoholic Patient in Chapter 14).
