Removing the drug from the user s system is only the first step in an ongoing process regardless of which technique is used. For an addict, the drug has become a part of his or her lifestyle. That lifestyle must change in order for that person to remain clean. Twelve-step programs such as Narcotics Anonymous have proven very helpful to many in the everyday battle to avoid relapse.

Drug addiction should be seen as a chronic condition, subject to relapses. If clients comply with the services offered to them by healthcare professionals, the prognosis may be favourable. However, it must be emphasised that clients will have to maintain a long-life condition of abstention from illicit drugs. Sometimes, this will require long-term attendance of self-help groups (e.g. Narcotics Anonymous). 

Principles of management of SUDs are very similar to those for the management of alcoholism. The goal is a treatment approach that enhances the probability of abstinence from the substance, assists the patient in rebuilding a life free of substances, and works to prevent relapse. In this section we briefly describe the peer self-help movement organized for helping individuals identified as alcoholics—Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). Because of space limitations we cannot describe in detail the major self-help groups for the treatment of drug problems, called Narcotics Anonymous (NA). NA is analogous to AA, however, and what wc know about AA can be applied readily to NA. 

The self-help groups Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous are major resources in helping people who have alcohol and drug use disorders, respectively.
