Databases differ in their strengths and weaknesses, as well as in their focus. As a result, dupHcate searches carried out on different databases generally produce different results. This has been demonstrated in comparative studies of retrieval results for a group of patent databases (31,32). Participants in one study (31) made an effort to develop optimal search strategies in each database tested, yet in no instance did one file produce perfect retrieval. Both investigations (31,32) found that results from the various databases complemented each other. As a result, searchers are counseled to use multiple databases whenever possible. There is no pat answer to the question of how many files to use or which files to use however, more files mean more expenditure, and searchers must develop their own cost—benefit relationship. 

Competent advice on the correct packaging to use for hazardous materials or other produces is obtainable from consultants in the field of packaging who are members of the Institute of Packaging Professionals, consultants counsel. Where products are sold at retail to consumers it is necessary to have a Universal Product Code (UPC) printed on its label. The Universal Product Codes are assigned by the Uniform Code Counsel, 8163 Old Yankee Road, Suite J, Dayton, Ohio 45458. With the bar coding system, the information which is most meaningful to its user can be represented. This can include numeric and alpha (word) representations. 

Professor Colin Russell, historian of science and emeritus professor at the Open University, gave me helpful counsel on the history of chemistry and showed me how to take a philosophical attitude to the disagreements that beset the relation between practising scientists and historians of science. Second, Max Dresden, who was both my thesis advisor and loyal friend. As Jay was the perfect teacher of high school physics, so Max was the quintessential physics professor. Max opened my eyes to the deej) mystery we call the universe, and taught me that the path to truth is indistinguishable from the path to beauty. The seminal idea and outline of this book-its major themes, chapters, and overall organization -benefitted greatly from Max s experience and wise counsel. I have followed our bible of ideas ever since Max and I lovingly crafted a skeletal version of it prior to our first meeting with a potential publisher over a decade ago. 

William Eugene Parham, Treasurer and member of the Board of Directors and of the Advisory Board of Organic Syntheses, died May 21, 1976 of a coronary occlusion near his summer home on Deer Lake, near Deer River, Minnesota, at the age of 53. Dr. Parham joined the Board of Editors on September 7, 1958 and served as Editor-in-Chief of Volume 44 of Organic Syntheses in 1964. He became a member of the Advisory Board and was elected to the Board of Directors in 1966, and served as Vice President from 1969 to 1974, at. which time he succeeded Richard S. Schreiber as Treasurer. As Treasurer, Dr. Parham was very effective in securing competent legal counsel for Organic Syntheses and in clarifying its foundation tax status with the Internal Revenue Service.
