Corrosion chemical resistance

Properties Colorless. D 2.10-2.15, refr index 1.43. Impervious to corrosive chemicals, resistant to most organic solvents, heat resistant. Nonflammable. Thermoplastic. Zero moisture absorption high-im-pact strength transparent films and thin sheets. Use Chemical piping, gaskets, tank linings, connectors, valve diaphragms, wire and cable insulation, electronic components. [Pg.293]

The reactive epoxies form a tight, cross-linked polymer network and are characterized by toughness, good adhesion, corrosive-chemical resistance, and good dielectric properties. [Pg.507]

Nonreactivity or corrosion (chemical) resistance of polymer concretes to aggressive influences is one of the most important features of their physical and mechanical properties. It is defined as the ability of a material to resist corrosive environments and preserve the properties and forms. [Pg.9]

A corrosion, chemical resistant resin particularly in respect of alkali. [Pg.186]

Bisphenol A. One mole of acetone condenses with two moles of phenol to form bisphenol A [80-05-07] which is used mainly in the production of polycarbonate and epoxy resins. Polycarbonates (qv) are high strength plastics used widely in automotive appHcations and appHances, multilayer containers, and housing appHcations. Epoxy resins (qv) are used in fiber-reinforced larninates, for encapsulating electronic components, and in advanced composites for aircraft—aerospace and automotive appHcations. Bisphenol A is also used for the production of corrosion- and chemical-resistant polyester resins, polysulfone resins, polyetherimide resins, and polyarylate resins. [Pg.99]

Surface Fluorination of Polymers. Fluorocarbon-coated objects have many practical appHcations because the chemically adherent surface provides increased thermal stabiHty, resistance to oxidation and corrosive chemicals and solvents, decreased coefficient of friction and thus decreased wear, and decreased permeabiHty to gas flow. Unusual surface effects can be obtained by fluorinating the polymer surfaces only partially (74). [Pg.279]

Chemically Resistant Fibers. Fibers with exceUent chemical resistance to corrosive and/or chemical warfare agents or extreme pH conditions (eg, very acidic or very alkaline) were initially used for protective clothing. However, appHcations for filtration of gases and Hquids in numerous industrial faciHties are now the more important. For example, PPS is suitable for use in filter fabrics for coal-fired boilers because of its outstanding chemical and heat resistance to acidic flue gases and its exceUent durabUity under these end use conditions. Many high tenacity fibers are also chemically inert or relatively unaffected under a variety of conditions. Aramids, gel spun polyethylene, polypropylene, fluorocarbon, and carbon fibers meet these criteria and have been used or are being considered for appHcations where chemical resistance is important. [Pg.70]

The MSDS (46) for thiophosgene describes it as highly toxic, corrosive lachrymator and moisture sensitive compound. It may be fatal if inhaled, swallowed, or absorbed through the skin. When using this material one should wear the appropriate NIOSH/OSHA-approved respirator, chemical-resistant gloves, safety goggles, and other protective clothing. It should be used only in a chemical fume hood. [Pg.131]

Health and Safety Factors. MSC has a vapor toxicity on mice of LD q 4.7 mg/L. It is a lachrymator and in order to prevent contact with eyes, goggles should be worn. It is also corrosive to skin and therefore chemically resistant gloves and protective clothing should be worn to prevent contact with skin. Containers should only be opened where there is adequate ventilation. [Pg.153]

Successful operation of the gaseous diffusion process requires a special, fine-pored diffusion barrier, mechanically rehable and chemically resistant to corrosive attack by the process gas. For an effective separating barrier, the diameter of the pores must approach the range of the mean free path of the gas molecules, and in order to keep the total barrier area required as small as possible, the number of pores per unit area must be large. Seals are needed on the compressors to prevent both the escape of process gas and the inflow of harm fill impurities. Some of the problems of cascade operation are discussed in Reference 16. [Pg.85]

The thermal stabiUty of epoxy phenol—novolak resins is useful in adhesives, stmctural and electrical laminates, coatings, castings, and encapsulations for elevated temperature service (Table 3). Filament-wound pipe and storage tanks, liners for pumps and other chemical process equipment, and corrosion-resistant coatings are typical appHcations using the chemically resistant properties of epoxy novolak resins. [Pg.364]

Corrosive chemicals and external exposure can cause tank failure. Materials of construction should be chosen so that they are compatible with the chemicals and exposure involved. Welding reduces the corrosion resistance of many alloys, leading to localized attack at the heat-affected zones. This may be prevented by the use of the proper alloys and weld materials, in some cases combined with annealing heat treatment. [Pg.2308]

The most chemical-resistant plastic commercially available today is tetrafluoroethylene or TFE (Teflon). This thermoplastic is practically unaffected by all alkahes and acids except fluorine and chlorine gas at elevated temperatures and molten metals. It retains its properties up to 260°C (500°F). Chlorotrifluoroethylene or CTFE (Kel-F, Plaskon) also possesses excellent corrosion resistance to almost all acids and alkalies up to 180°C (350°F). A Teflon derivative has been developed from the copolymerization of tetrafluoroethylene and hexafluoropropylene. This resin, FEP, has similar properties to TFE except that it is not recommended for continuous exposures at temperatures above 200°C (400°F). Also, FEP can be extruded on conventional extrusion equipment, while TFE parts must be made by comphcated powder-metallurgy techniques. Another version is poly-vinylidene fluoride, or PVF2 (Kynar), which has excellent resistance to alkahes and acids to 150°C (300°F). It can be extruded. A more recent development is a copolymer of CTFE and ethylene (Halar). This material has excellent resistance to strong inorganic acids, bases, and salts up to 150°C. It also can be extruded. [Pg.2457]

At the present time they are used for a variety of electrical and chemically resistant mouldings, for corrosion-resistant linings, for coatings, for flexible printed circuits and for wire insulation. One particular growth area arising from... [Pg.373]

Because silver, gold and copper electrodes are easily activated for SERS by roughening by use of reduction-oxidation cycles, SERS has been widely applied in electrochemistry to monitor the adsorption, orientation, and reactions of molecules at those electrodes in-situ. Special cells for SERS spectroelectrochemistry have been manufactured from chemically resistant materials and with a working electrode accessible to the laser radiation. The versatility of such a cell has been demonstrated in electrochemical reactions of corrosive, moisture-sensitive materials such as oxyhalide electrolytes [4.299]. [Pg.262]

Some corrosion-resistant materials for concentrated aqueous solutions and acids are given in Tables 4.10 and 4.11. The resistance of some common polymers to organic solvents is summarized in Table 4.12. The attack process is accelerated by an increase in temperature. The chemical resistance of a range of common plastics is summarized in Table 4.13. [Pg.55]

The outstanding properties of copper-base materials are high electrical and thermal conductivity, good durabihty in mildly corrosive chemical environments and excellent ductility for forming complex shapes. As a relatively weak material, copper is often alloyed with zinc (brasses), tin (bronzes), aluminum and nickel to improve its mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. [Pg.77]

Paints based on phenolic resins are oil modified to permit drying at ambient temperatures. They are very suitable for most industrial atmospheres. Paints with a higher standard of chemical resistance are required for equipment that is splashed by corrosive process liquors. [Pg.123]

A carbon graphite insertion ring provides a good bearing surface for the seal ring to rotate against. It is also resistive to attack by corrosive chemicals over a wide range of temperatures. [Pg.945]
