Power grasps

In those earliest days, I suppose Szilard was the more deeply absorbed in the fission problem - after all, he had worked out the theory of a nuclear chain reaction even before fission had been discovered and on March 20, 1939, he applied for a U.S. patent on what he called an Apparatus for Nuclear Transmutation - i.e. a neutron chain reactor based on the fission of uranium (6). Wigner was fully aware of Szilard s thinking and with his powerful grasp of the mathematical and physical principles underlying the chain reaction, Wigner was, even then, able to make independent estimates of the critical conditions.

Many operators find it hard to grasp the power of compressed air. Section 2.2 (a) describes how the end was blown off a pressure vessel, killing two men, because the vent was choked. Compressed air was being blown into the vessel, to prove that the inlet line was clear. It was estimated that the gauge pressure reached 20 psi (1.3 bar) when the burst occurred. The operators found it hard to believe that a pressure of only twenty pounds could do so much damage. Explosion experts had to be brought in to convince them that a chemical explosion had not occurred. 

Haber was slow to grasp the implications of the Nazis rise to power. As Germans boycotted Jewish businesses and Hitler s brownshirts removed Jewish students from university libraries and laboratories, the Nazis passed a law on April 7, 1933, to cleanse the civil service and universities of Jews. By this time, Haber s Kaiser Wilhelm Institute was financed by the government and its employees were treated as civil functionaries subject to the new law. Haber himself was exempt because of war work and seniority. Eager for a chemical warfare center, Nazi authorities singled out Haber s institute and ordered him to fire its Jews. At the same time, the Kaiser Wilhelm Society told Haber to somehow keep his important senior scientists. He had until May 2 to act.

Note, therefore, that the elements are found in their separation (Scheydung) the same in shape and form as they exist in the essential elements. For air shows itself like air and is not to be grasped (or confined), as some in their minds imagine. For the reason that in the apparatus for parting1 (or separating) the air rises and breaks forth like a wind, and sometimes passes off with water, sometimes with earth, sometimes with fire. For such a special wonderful lifting power exists in air as when from the essential element water, air is to be separated, that... 

While classical phase diagrams provide a powerful methodology for grasping the thermodynamic behavior of few-component systems, it is evident that the restricted 2D or 3D realm of human graphical intuition cannot adequately cope with the complexities of many-component systems. Hence, it is important to find generalized analytical techniques that can accurately represent many-component phase behavior for arbitrary values of c. Such techniques will be considered in the metric geometric representation of multicomponent phenomena (Chapter 12). 

They say that all private property is acquired and improved for the reason that each one of us by himself has his own home and wife and children. From this, self-love springs.
