Corporate organization structure

Management methods include the corporate philosophy and management techniques. It is very difficult to integrate a top-down organization structure with a bottom-up structure. The level of management involvement in day-to-day operations can differ across supply chain members.

The strategic benefits of the flat company organization structure lie in the changing corporate culture, in performance that increasingly becomes enjoyable. This may give you a significant edge over your competitors. 

The evaluation factors used most frequently are price, quality, and delivery. Other possible factors would be production capacity and flexibility, technical capabilities and support, information and communication systems, financial status, innovation and R D, corporate social responsibility (CSR), safety awareness, political stability, cultural congruence with the buyer, and terrorism risk. Other frequently used factors include organization structure, training and development policies, performance history, reputation, amount of past business, warranties and claim policies, procedural comphance, and return policies.

One method used often relies on structure-reactivity relationships (Atkinson, 1986,1987, 1988 Kwok and Atkinson, 1995). This empirical estimation method has been shown to provide good agreement (generally to within a factor of 2) between experimentally measured and calculated room temperature rate constants for 90% of 485 organic compounds (Kwok and Atkinson, 1995). It is the basis of the Syracuse Research Corporation s "Atmospheric Oxidation Program" [see Meylan and Howard (1993) for a discussion of an earlier version of this program]. The general approach of this estimation method has been described (Atkinson, 1986,1987,1988 Kwok and Atkinson, 1995). 

Some of the companies in THE ALTERNATIVE ENERGY 250 are so large in scope and in variety of business endeavors conducted within a parent organization, that we have been unable to completely list all subsidiaries, affiliations, divisions and activities within a firm s corporate structure. 

A market-oriented organization was created, as decentralized as possible, as centralized as necessary . The strategic rationale was driven by the diversity of market segments and fast-changing market conditions, an environment in which innovation and market intelligence were crucial. The new structure separated the lean corporate center, operating businesses, and services to maximize autonomy and entrepreneurship. 

Our own research into best practice in this area does not surface one right answer, and given the vast differences between chemical companies, we would be very surprised if it did. Nevertheless, one organizational model seems to fit the needs of the chemical industry particularly well in our experience, this is an organization with global business divisions (i.e., product-based business units with worldwide control of all critically important business functions) as the main axle, guided by the corporate center and supported by shared services. About three quarters of the global players in chemicals have adopted this structure.
