Most of the forensic science or crime laboratories located in North America are associated with law enforcement agencies, medical examiner—coroner departments, or prosecutors offices. There are a large number of independent consultants, also. Laboratories exist at the municipal, county, state, and federal levels of government. There are approximately 300 government-operated forensic science laboratories in the United States. [Pg.485]

Grown Macroring Inclusion Compounds (Coronates). Prototypical crown macrorings are cycHc ohgoethers such as given by formulae (1—4) (Fig. 3). Inside the hng they make available a negatively polarized cavity capable of accommodating metal ions to form crown cation inclusion... [Pg.61]

Podates AcycHc analogues of crown ethers /coronands and cryptands (podands, eg, (11) (30) are also capable of forming inclusion compounds (podates) with cations and uncharged organic molecules, the latter being endowed with a hydrogen bond fiinctionahty. Podates normally are less stable than coronates and cryptates but have favorable kinetics. [Pg.62]

Complexes Tlie term cryptate is now accepted to mean the complex formed between a cryptand and a substrate. Tlie corresponding complex with a coronand would be a coronate, a term suggested some years ago by the same authors . Presumably, a complex between a podand and some substrate would be a podate . [Pg.8]

Coronal brain cryostat sections have been processed for im mu nohistochemistry and sequentially incubated with a primary monoclonal mouse anti human somatostatin antibody and secondary antimouse antibody conjugated with the fluorescence-dye Cy-3. Images have been taken with a Zeiss Axioplan fluorescence microscope. Scale bar, 100 pM. [Pg.1148]

A new coronavirus was quickly identified after the outbreak of an atypical pneumonia in southern China early in 2003. The new virus eventually caused 8,000 infections with approximately 800 deaths in 29 countries. The condition was named Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, SARS, and the causative coronavirus named SARS-CoV. The zoonotic nature of the infection came with the identification of a similar virus in bats (Poon et al. 2005), although it is possible that the bat virus passed through other animal hosts and recombined with other SARS-like coron-aviruses prior to infecting humans (Hon et al. 2008). SARS-CoV is not currently circulating in the human population however, the mysterious appearance and rapid spread of this virus emphasized how vulnerable the human population is to such respiratory infections. This has spurred interest in the development of antivirals that could be used either in treatment or as prophylaxis to complement public health measures in curbing future outbreaks. [Pg.101]

One eritical factor that has been neglected in considering mechanisms of cardiac fatalities is the timeframe for various types of toxicities. For example, a majority of cocaine-related fatalities and near fatalities reported from emergency rooms are attributed to one or more types of cardiac ischemic or hypertensive episodes (Isner et al. 1986). Thus, these studies may discount the cocaine-induced arrhythmias and conduction defects as important direct causes of fatalities. Yet, if coroner reports are used as data sources (Virmani et al. 1988 Wetli and Wright 1979 Mittleman and Wetli 1984), there are great numbers of deaths in which pulmonary effusion and lack of evidence for coronary occlusion, acute myocardial infarction, or... [Pg.328]

That night at Northampton we dined, and drank a little but not too much, and used each other courteously, making plans for the progress of the King and the coronation. I had not long since begged Richard of Gloucester to arbitrate in a dispute with one of my tenants, and we spoke of that and other business of our private estates. He has a quick mind for such matters, and an instinct for what is both fair and politic. At dawn I rose and made ready to go to Ned we were but a day s ride from London. [Pg.291]
