Kjelstrup and Bedeaux [81] speculate that the need in mechanical and chemical engineering for more accurate modeling tools to enable process equipment designs that waste less work wiU increase the use of irreversible thermodynamics in the near future. Better and more efficient use of energy resources is also a central future requirement. It may then no longer be sufficient to optimize the first law efficiency solely. The second law may have to be taken into account as well. Under future UN environmental protection conventions and protocols the process industry may be forced to report on their aimual entropy production. As a political tool, economical benefits could also be given to those industries that limit or reduce their entropy production. [Pg.62]

In general, this textbook progresses towards a critical analysis of the data and how they can be used to solve environmental problems. Forexample, in Chapter 2 sufficient attention is paid to both sources of GHG pollution, present trends, basic chemistry and physics, and implementation of the international conventions and protocols for abatement strategies. Less attention has been paid to technological approaches, which in general lie outside the scope of this book. [Pg.485]

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is in a different category, as Article 81(1) of Protocol I specifically requires the parties to a conflict to grant the ICRC all facilities within their power so as to enable it to cany out the humanitarian functions assigned to it by the Conventions and this Protocol. Therefore, while States parties to the conflict retain the authority to grant facilities to the ICRC, the sovereign right of those States to decide whether to allow or not to allow such facilities is strictly limited. However, with respect to humanitarian activities other than those specified in the Geneva Conventions and Protocol I, the ICRC s actions are subject to the consent of the Parties to the conflict concerned. ... [Pg.126]

Apart from the individual criminal responsibility, when there is a breach of an international obligation, a State becomes immediately nnder the obligation to cease the breach and make Ml reparation for the injury caused by such breach. The obligations to bear responsibility and make full reparation, including compensation, for breaches of IHL are explicitly provided for in the 1907 Hague Convention, Geneva Conventions and Protocol I, which have also now become part of cnstomary international law applicable to both international and non-intemational armed conflict. ... [Pg.136]

The production and use of chlorine, as well as certain chlorinated substances bear risks for human health and the environment. International discussions are underway on legally-binding conventions and protocols thereof Matters of concern include the use of mercury, asbestos, chemicals having an ozone-depletion potential (e.g., chloro-... [Pg.211]

In order to understand current approaches for prevention and control of biofilms, we must first consider the reasons for the failure of conventional antimicrobial protocols. There are thought to be three main reasons as to why biofilm bacteria out-survive their planktonic counterparts during antimicrobial treatments (reviewed by McBain et a/.16).These are i) poor penetration of antimicrobial compounds due to the presence and turn-over of exopolymer slime (glycocalyx) ii) the imposition of extreme nutrient limitation within the depths of the biofilm community and the co-incident expression of metabolically-dormant, recalcitrant phenotypes and (iii) the expression of attachment-specific phenotypes that are radically different and intrinsically less susceptible than unattached ones. [Pg.42]

Second Step For further evaluation, a comparative IHC study was performed using citraconic anhydride and conventional AR protocols with a TMA of 31 cases of bladder cancer. Findings are summarized in Table 1.4. Only 27 cases were available for evaluation due to loss of tissue cores for four cases. Among 27 cases, there were 6, 8, and 13 cases for strong, moderate... [Pg.10]

Although the novel AR protocol using citraconic anhydride improved the intensity of IHC on FFPE tissue sections for more than half of the antibodies tested, compared to that achieved by other conventional AR protocols, not all antibodies benefitted, which would argue that the citraconic anhydride method does not serve as a truly universal AR protocol. Indeed, many investigators (Table 1.2) have concluded that different antigens may require different specific AR protocols. In this respect, the test battery is a convenient and cost-effective method for assessing the appropriate AR protocol.2,8 Nevertheless, the present data certainly support inclusion of the citraconic anhydride AR method in such a test battery. With respect to the two heating temperatures for citraconic anhydride, the ultimate choice of method for any laboratory may depend on the equipment available. [Pg.13]

Both natural and non-natural compounds with a 2ff,5ff-pyrano[4,3-fc]pyran-5-one skeleton are of interest in medicinal chemistry. Several natural products, such as the pyripyropenes, incorporate this bicyclic ring system. The group of Beifuss has described an efficient microwave-promoted domino synthesis of the 2ff,5H-pyr-ano[4,3-fo]pyran-5-one skeleton by condensation of a,/3-unsaturated aldehydes with 4-hydroxy-6-methyl-2]-f-pyran-2-one (Scheme 6.244) [428]. It is assumed that in the presence of an amino acid catalyst a Knoevenagel condensation occurs first, which is then followed by a 6jr-electron electrocyclization to the pyran ring. While the conventional thermal protocol required a reaction time of up to 25 h (refluxing ethyl... [Pg.259]

To us, a component architecture defines the schemes of how components can be plugged together and interact. This definition may vary from one project or component library to another and includes schemes such as CORBA, DCOM, JavaBeans, database interface protocols such as ODBC, and lower-level protocols such as TCP/IP as well as simpler sets of conventions and rules created for specific projects. [Pg.433]

In the 1970s the United Nations enacted controls to reduce litter by adopting two treaties (1) the Convention on the Prevention of Marine Pollution by Dumping of Wastes and Other Matter, aka the London Convention, and (2) the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships, aka MARPOL. The London Convention has been updated by the London Protocol, which came into force in 2006. MARPOL was updated in 1978 with new provisions coming into force in 2006. [Pg.848]

Summarizing our results, the comparison of the effect of both conventional and improved deactivation protocols on the snrface areas of the derived catalytic samples suggests that ADV-CPS is more severe than the standard CPS protocol, an observation in total agreement with the varying parameters of the methods. Results from FTIR acidity studies show that keeping the metals reduced during the larger part... [Pg.138]

As can be seen in the intramolecular cycloaddition (Section 8.03.5.1), the intermolecular Diels-Alder reactions between functionalized 2(l/f)-pyrazinones 83 and dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate (DMAD) forming bicyclo adducts 84 has been shown to be significantly rate enhanced and increased in yields by using controlled microwave irradiation compared to the conventional thermal protocols (Scheme 21) <2002JOC7904>. The microwave-assisted Diels-Alder reactions of substituted 2(l//)-pyrazinones with ethene are significantly more effective utilizing prepressurized (up to 10 bar) reaction vessels <20040BC154>. [Pg.294]
