Controlling influence

Inhibitors The use of various substances or inhibitors as additives to corrosive environments to decrease corrosion of metals in the environment is an important means of combating corrosion. This is generally most attractive in closed or recirculating systems in which the annual cost of inhibitor is low. However, it has also proved to be economicaUv attrac tive for many once-through systems, such as those encountered in petroleum-processing operations. Inhibitors are effective as the result of their controlling influence on the cathode- or anode-area reactions. [Pg.2423]

Beryllium is readily attacked by most acids and, being amphoteric, is slowly attacked by caustic alkalis with the evolution of hydrogen. As might be anticipated, in view of the controlling influence of the surface film of beryllia on corrosion behaviour, concentrated nitric acid has little effect on beryllium , while the dilute acid results in slow attack. Hot acid is much more reactive. Nitric acid is in fact often used to pickle-off residual mild steel from hot-extruded clad beryllium. [Pg.834]

The difference in position of attack on primary and secondary aromatic amines, compared with phenols, probably reflects the relative electron-density of the various positions in the former compounds exerting the controlling influence for, in contrast to a number of other aromatic electrophilic substitution reactions, diazo coupling is sensitive to relatively small differences in electron density (reflecting the rather low ability as an electrophile of PhN2 ). Similar differences in electron-density do of course occur in phenols but here control over the position of attack is exerted more by the relative strengths of the bonds formed in the two products in the two alternative coupled products derivable from amines, this latter difference is much less marked. [Pg.148]

First the interaction of selected tetramethylpiperidine (TMP) derivatives with radicals arising from Norrish-type I cleavage of diisopropyl ketone under oxygen was studied. These species are most probably the isopropyl peroxy and isobutyryl peroxy radicals immediately formed after a-splitting of diisopropyl ketone and subsequent addition of O2 to the initially generated radicals. Product analysis and kinetic studies showed that the investigated TMP derivatives exercise a marked controlling influence over the nature of the products formed in the photooxidative process. The results obtained point to an interaction between TMP derivatives and especially the isobutyryl peroxy radical. [Pg.65]

In the presence of TMP derivatives, on the other hand, a controlling influence on the course of the reaction appears only two products are formed, and these in amounts bearing a stoichiometric relationship to the amount of DBK decomposed (reaction (5)). This surprising effect of HALS derivatives has not previously been reported. Therefore the question arises is this... [Pg.70]

The experiments described in this and in the earlier paperi show that the HALS derivatives studied exercise a marked controlling influence on the product mixture resulting from the photolysis of ketones in the presence of oxygen. A detailed study of the results leads to the further following conclusions ... [Pg.80]

A parameter design is a design where two kinds of independent variables are used. These are the controllable influences and the uncontrollable influences, also called control factors and noise factors. The aim of the parameter design is to find settings of the control factors where the variability due to the noise factors is minimal. [Pg.242]

Controlling influences on the progress of the cell cycle are effected from various levels that are linked to one another (Fig. 13.3). [Pg.387]

Process owners are the most appropriate owners for all documentation supporting their processes. This includes having either direct ownership or controlling influence over guidance and execution documentation such as corporate policies and standards, local requirements and standard operating procedures (SOPs), logs, and records. [Pg.269]

But it is important to appreciate that the metabolism of foreign compounds is not completely separate from intermediary metabolism, but linked to it. Consequently, this will exert a controlling influence on the metabolism of foreign compounds. Some of the important factors controlling xenobiotic metabolism are... [Pg.116]
