Control valve authority

Another pressure control method is a hot gas bypass. The author has seen a retrofitted hot gas bypass system solve an unsatisfactory pressure control scheme. In the faulty system, a pressure control valve was placed between the overhead condenser and the lower reflux drum. This produced en atic reflux drum pressures. A pressure safety valve (psv) vented the reflux drum to the flare to protect against over-pressure. A psv saver control valve, set slightly below the psv relieving... [Pg.67]

Section 22.6 has accounted for one important nonlinearity, namely the velocity limit of the valve. Another nonlinearity that can cause control problems is static friction, sometimes referred to as stiction, although more properly known as Coulomb friction. Static friction acts to prevent or impede relative motion by opposing the force applied. Its effect on valve movement may be measured as the difference between the valve s demanded travel (equal to the normalized controller output) and the actual valve travel seen on the plant. This difference will lie normally in the normalized range 0.001 to 0.005 (0.1 to 0.5% of total valve travel) for valves fitted with a valve positioning system, although the author has had experience of an important control valve with a value measured at... [Pg.290]

The filters should be installed in an accessible location as close to the column as possible. T)Tical good locations are close to the foot of the vertical rise of liquid feed or reflux, or just upstream of the flashing control valve for flashing feeds. The line downstream of the filter should be adequately flushed or blown (Sec. 11.1) to shake free and remove loose rust particles prior to the startup. The author is familiar with one case where the metallurgy of this downstream line was upgraded from carbon to stainless steel to avoid the rust particles. One case has been reported (299a) where spray nozzles plugged due to reliance on filters that were too dis-... [Pg.66]

It has been recommended to design a forced-circulation reboiler for a high pressure drop (134). In some cases (68), a restriction is placed in the vapor line downstream of the reboiler and sized to prevent vaporization in the reboiler. This restriction is often placed at the column inlet nozzle (68), but this may generate an undesirable high-velocity jet at the column inlet (see Sec. 4.1, guideline 5). Further, a restriction downstream of the reboiler may interfere with the action of a control valve located in the liquid line to the reboiler. The author is also familiar with a case where such a restriction experienced erosion at an intolerable rate. [Pg.458]

Some troublesome experiences with liquid carryover fi om these condensers have been reported (381). The author had an experience with liquid carryover from a vent condenser mounted on top of a Cg splitter reflux drum (similar to Fig. 15.14c). Carryover occurred whenever the vent control valve opened excessively, and was recognized by "watering or icing up of the line downstream of the valve (due to liquid flashing). The author is familiar with other similar experiences. Installing a valve limiter was sufficient to prevent carryover in the above case. [Pg.477]

Flow control valves, pressure regulator, and gas flow measurement meters shall be fitted on incoming gas lines. These shall be of statutorily approved make only and meet all safety standards as directed by inspection authorities. [Pg.236]

Who The employer is to provide a trained and equipped firefighting organization (fire brigade) as warranted by the project. During demolition or alterations, existing automatic sprinkler installation control valves may only be operated by properly authorized persons. The alarm code and reporting instructions are to be conspicuously posted at phones and employee entrances. [Pg.32]

Liquid hydrogen in insulated cargo tanks must be shipped with fill densities shown in the applicable regulations for the maximum set-to-discharge pressure of the pressure control valve. Liquid hydrogen, when shipped in portable tanks, is subject to fill densities shown in the authorizing exemptions. See 49 CFR 173.316 (c)(3) [11]. [Pg.424]

The checking and readjustment as necessary of all safety controls is an essential part of periodic maintenance - possibly annually. A time should be chosen when temporary stoppage of the plant will not cause inconvenience. Unsafe conditions can be set up by throtding valves, stopping pumps, or removing the load. In each case the relevant safety control should function at the pre-set conditions. Safety checks on specialized items such as fire dampers may be required from time to time by local authorities, and these checks, together with the expert advice available from the testing officers, should be welcomed as proof of the inherent safety of the installation. [Pg.344]

As described above, a lockout device can be used as a security measure to prevent unauthorized access to aboveground valves located within chemical processing systems. Valve lockout devices are locks that are specially designed to fit over valves and valve handles to control their ability to be turned or seated. These devices can be used to lock the valve into the desired position. Once the valve is locked, it cannot be turned unless the locking device is unlocked or removed by an authorized individual. [Pg.198]

Automatic systems based on FIA were also implemented for wine analysis. In a comprehensive review, Ferreira and coworkers [97] remarked that some systems had limitations as many of them were only tested with a particular wine type or demanded a previous treatment of the sample before injection. The lack of robustness of some manifold components (tubing of peristaltic pumps, some types of injection devices) was also thought to prevent the extensive use of FIA in industrial laboratories [98]. SIA has been proposed as a mechanically simple alternative to FIA [99]. As previously stated, SIA is based on the sequential aspiration of well-defined sample and reagent zones into a holding coil by means of a multiposition valve. The flow is then reversed and the stacked zones are mixed and propelled to the detector, where the reaction product is monitored. As already described for other beverage matrices (water, juices), the SIA of wine has been developed in recent years for the determination of more than 20 species and several aspects of these systems were reviewed by Segundo et al. [100] in a recent paper. The authors focused on the implementation of in-line treatment and the adaptation of system operation through software control to enable determination in different kind of wines. [Pg.477]

To ensure a consistent inspiratory flow rate during cough challenge studies, the author employs a compressed-air-driven nebulizer (model 646 De Vilbiss Health Care, Somerset, PA, USA) controlled by a dosimeter (KoKo DigiDoser nSpire Health, Louisville, CO, USA) that is modified by the addition of an inspiratory flow regulator valve (RIFR nSpire Health). The valve limits inspiratory flow rate to... [Pg.302]

With the use of a standard nebulizer, significant variation may occur in the amount of aerosol delivered per inhalation, even if inspiratory flow rate is controlled (as discussed earlier). A second important determinant of nebulizer output is related to the actual structure of the nebulizer. In the De Vilbiss 646 model, for example, the straw and baffle assembly is a detachable component of the nebulizer that is removed for washing. When this component is reattached, variable distances may result the straw and baffle assembly and the jet orifice, which is the source of pressurized air (see Fig. 2 in Dicpinigaitis 2005). This variation in distance, albeit minute, may result in variable nebulizer output. Thus, to optimize reproducibility, the author uses a nebulizer with an inspiratory flow regulator valve, as described earlier, and, with the straw and baffle assembly welded in place, thereby eliminating the variations in nebulizer output that may result when this component is detached and reattached, resulting in variable distances between the jet orifice and straw. [Pg.302]
