Commercial compounds are oil-soluble organic molecules containing chlorine, sulfur or phosphorus atoms (Figure 9.12). [Pg.363]

Principle. An organic compound which contains chlorine is mixed with sodium peroxide and ignited in a closed metal bomb. The chlorine is thus converted to sodium chloride, and after acidification the chloride is estimated by the Volhard volumetric method. Bromine and iodine, when constituents of organic compounds similarly treated, are converted largely into sodium bromate and iodate respectively these ions are therefore subsequently reduced by hydrazine to bromide and iodide ions, and estimated as before. [Pg.505]

Apply the test to compounds which contain chlorine or bromine. If the compound is a solid, dissolve 0 1 g. in the minimum volume of pure, dry acetone. To 1 ml. of the sodium iodide acetone reagent add 2 drops of the compound (if a hquid) or the acetone solution (if a sohd). Shake and allow to stand at room temperature for 3 minutes. Note whether a precipitate is formed and also whether the solution acquires a reddish-brown colour (liberation of iodine). This example can be used in reverse to show the usefulness of looking for such isotopes. Suppose there were an unknown sample that had two molecular ion peaks in the ratio of 3 1 that were two mass units apart then it could reasonably be deduced that it was highly likely the unknown contained chlorine. Statistically, because their abundance ratio is 3 1, three Cl isotope atoms combine for each Cl atom. Properties. The physical properties of aHphatic fluorine compounds containing chlorine are similar to those of the PECs or HECs (3,5). They usually have high densities and low boiling points, viscosities, and surface tensions. The irregularity in the boiling points of the fluorinated methanes, however, does not appear in the chlorofluorocarbons.
