Container ships

The extent and manner of NDE applied in different shipyards has been the subject of a recently completed exercise within LR. The exercise involved randomly selected shipyards building ship types which included oil tankers, bulk carriers, gas carriers, container ships, ro-ro and general cargo ships. The variation in extent of applied NDE that was observed is summarised in Table 1. 

There was a small drop in aerosol compounds in 1990 (2.88 biUion units) as compared to 1989 (2.91 biUion units). Aerosol valve and container production remained high. 3.13 biUion valves were produced in 1990. 320 million of the containers shipped in 1990 were aluminum. 

Sodium Hypochlorite (Liquid Bleach). Commercial strength Hquid bleach used by industries, laundries, and in swimming pool sanitation, contains 12—15% av CI2 and is sold in 3.8- and 7.6-L polyethylene bottles and 23—57-L carboys, 205-L dmms, and tank tmcks of about 3-kI capacity and greater. Household bleach contains about 5% av CI2 and is sold in 1—5.7-L polyethylene containers. Shipping is limited within a short radius of the plant... 

Portable tanks may be stowed io the holds of conventional cargo ships or special container ships, or they may be fastened on deck.

This effect can be compared to the gas consumption of a car requiring more gas per 100 km being run at a higher average speed. Selective papers address the specifics of variable raw material consumption e.g. in the case of fuel consumption of container ships (Jetlund et al. 2004, p. 1271). Hence, the problem to balance raw material consumption and volatile raw material costs with sales quantities and prices has to be solved in value chain planning. 

DOT label This label is the hazard classification assigned by the U.S. Department of Transportation. Federal regulations require it on all containers shipped. 

Container ships have guides in the hold and on deck which hold boxlike containers or tanks. The tank is latched to a trailer chassis and hauled to shipside. A movable gantry, sometimes permanently installed on the ship, hoists the tank from the trailer and lowers it into the guides on the ship. This system achieves large savings in labor, but its application is sometimes hmited by lack of agreement between ship operators and unions. 

Between reality and assumptions, e.g. shipping industry went for faster more economic ships but should have targeted time in port as key economic criterion, thus container ships and Ro-Ros. 

Distribution and marketing expenses are costs incurred in the process of selling and distributing the various products. These costs include expenditures for materials handling, containers, shipping, sales offices, salesmen, technical sales service, and advertising. 

SPI resource of ""Sevmorput lighter-aboard container ship will be expired by 2010. Some MVs are also to be taken out of operation and dismantled in the near future (first ""Lepse FSV with Spent Nuclear Fuel (SNF) storage and ""Volodarskiy FSV with Solid Radioactive Waste (SRW) storage). 

The options of NS dismantlement at NERC down to one-RC imit and SNF transportation by some other special vessel (e.g., a container ship) were not considered at all because in such a case one would need constructing at NERC rather sophisticated transit infrastructure and RC on-shore interim-storage infrastructure along with building of a special vessel (container ship) to transport SNF. 

Another option is possible providing for shipment of containers, types 6 and 11, and shrouds, type 22, with SFAs to Andreeva Bay on board of a container ship in special transportation casks for further management of SFA stored therein. 

From the above summary, the inspector should see the importance of determining the condition of all containers shipped onto the site, and that the storage conditions-completely dry, off the ground, ventilated, and in the correct temperature range-have been met by the contractor.

Fluorocarbon materials are available as laboratory equipment in a variety of shapes, sizes, and forms and are considered to provide an ideal containment and storage material. Teflon containers have been used satisfactorily by the Trace Metals Project for containing, shipping, and storing a variety of petroleum samples. Epoxy-lined metal cans and caps were also used satisfactorily for bulk storage and shipment. 

A concept of a composite LH2 container has been developed in Canada where the outer shell is fabricated from fiber reinforced plastics. The tank volume is 60 m. Such vessels of which a first set has been manufactured already, are to be used for the transportation of smaller amounts of LH2 onboard conventional container ships, railway carriers, or as a storage medium near power or refueling stations [34, 35].

Substrate. In marine construction the substrate is generally hot-rolled mild steel, with some high-tensile steel in highly stressed areas (apertures in container ships), and aluminum where there are weight penalties (e.g., topsides of passenger liners, ferries, and naval vessels).
