Cargo ships

The extent and manner of NDE applied in different shipyards has been the subject of a recently completed exercise within LR. The exercise involved randomly selected shipyards building ship types which included oil tankers, bulk carriers, gas carriers, container ships, ro-ro and general cargo ships. The variation in extent of applied NDE that was observed is summarised in Table 1. [Pg.1041]

Liquid chloriaated paraffias are shipped ia dmms usually lacquer-liaed mild steel or polyethyleae and ia road or rail barrels. Where appropriate larger quantities can be shipped by sea either ia deck tanks of conventional cargo ships or ia chemical parcel tankers for larger consignments. [Pg.44]

Portable tanks may be stowed io the holds of conventional cargo ships or special container ships, or they may be fastened on deck. [Pg.1022]

Movement of freight accounts for one-third of all U.S. transportation energy consumption. But if the U.S. share of the export/import cargo shipping market was included, the figure would be even higher. [Pg.510]

When cargo ships and fishing boats are involved in accidents, there are vanous measures that have to be carried out to limit the flow of fuel oil into the water. Accidents in harbors and close to shore are treated with great care. Oil booms would be placed around the t cssel to prevent the spread of oil, and skimmers would he brought to the area to collect the oil released to the environment. In extreme cases the fuel oil cargo may be burned when the oil could not be pumped out or when a stranded vessel could not be refloated. [Pg.1046]

Obviously supply chains are global these days, and shipments are typically made by a variety of means, including cargo ships, air, rail, and trucks all of these can be late or can get in trouble because of the weather, traffic, industrial disputes, or other reasons. Supply chain systems like this are very complex, because of the uncertainties in deliveries, parts and shipments are lost and/or stolen, goods get damaged during shipment, or the number of international ports and customs often take unpredictable time to check shipments with different levels of safety/security, and many other reasons. [Pg.187]

The overload mechanism of failure was confirmed by field measurement of stress on cargo ships, which showed cracking. A typical residual stress pattern obtained on the tie-down sockets installed on the ships is shown in Figure 2.28. [Pg.162]

Dermal Effects. Dermal effects in humans have been reported after acute exposure to benzene vapors (Avis and Hutton 1993). After a fatal occupational exposure to benzene vapors on a chemical cargo ship for only minutes, autopsy reports on three victims revealed hemorrhagic respiratory tissues, and second degree bums on the face, trunk, and limbs (Avis and Hutton 1993). Skin irritation has been noted at occupational exposures of greater than 60 ppm for up to three weeks (Midzenski et al. 1992). These effects are due to direct contact of the skin with the vapor, and other dermal effects resulting from direct contact of the skin are discussed in Section 2.2.3.2. [Pg.66]

The inadvertent introduction of pathogens into new geographic areas Vibrio cholerae was introduced into waters off the coast of the southern United States when a cargo ship discharged contaminated ballast water in 1991. It is likely that a similar mechanism led to the introduction of cholera for the first time this century into South America in 1991. [Pg.189]

The worst industrial disaster in U.S. history occurred in April 1947. A cargo ship named the Grandcamp had been loaded with fertilizer in Texas City, a Texas port city of 50 000 people. The fertilizer consisted of tons of a compound called ammonium nitrate. Soon after the last bags of fertilizer had been loaded, a small fire occurred, and smoke was noticed coming from the ship s cargo hold. About an hour later, the ship exploded. [Pg.60]

In order to prevent corrosion loss, it is very important to inspect the coating condition inside the ballast tank of ship, such as oil tankers, LNG ships and cargo ships. The current inspection standard defines that the ratio of paint defect surface area in the total surface is visually inspected every two or three years periodically. However, the current visual inspection has some problems, such as the dangerous and dark environment for inspectors, the inaccurate evaluation result depending on the inspector s skill and the time consuming and heavy labor required in order to inspect all the hundreds of tank compartments. In order to overcome these issues,... [Pg.79]

The livlfiic was one of a number of liners which had their construction interrupted by (he war but which were hurriedly completed to serve as emergency troop/cargo ships. Others included the Orca and Minnekahda.. After the war the Belf>ic was rebuilt emerging as originally intended as the three-funnelled Belf>enland. [Pg.110]

As predicted, the enclosed harbors show highest concentrations of hydrocarbons St. George s Harbor (107 ftg/g dry sediment dt 35% ) and Castle Harbor (45.9 fxg/g 60% ). Castle Harbor is used almost solely by recreational vessels while St. George s Harbor is used by larger commercial vessels such as ocean liners and cargo ships. [Pg.276]
