Parts 178-179 Shipping Container and Tank Specifications

The shipping regulations are broken down into different specifications for different types of containers (e.g., rubber drums, cylinders, metal barrels, wooden barrels, and so on). Specified DOT markings are designated for each type of container. 

Tank builders are responsible for marking ranks with DOT specifications are required under Part 179. That marking constitutes a certification that the tank has been constructed to meet DOT standards, and the builder must inform anyone to whom the tank is transferred of standards not satisfied at the time of transfer.
