Contained use directive

The safety issues associated with GMO process-based biotechnology have resulted in a formalised set of regulations. In the UK, the Contained Use (1992) Regulations have implemented the EC Contained Use Directives. Risk assessment is a key requirement of the GMO regulations. For contained use, the emphasis historically has been on human health and safety but environmental considerations have gained increasing significance. [Pg.235]

Cool the mixture and decant the solution from the sodium bromide wash the salt with two 20 ml. portions of absolute alcohol and add the washings to the main solution. Distil off the alcohol, which contains the slight excess of n-propyl bromide used in the condensation, through a short fractionating column from a water bath. The residue A) of crude ethyl n-propylacetoacetate may be used directly in the preparation of methyl n-butyl ketone. If the fairly pure ester is required, distil the crude product under diminished pressure and collect the fraction boihng at 109-113727 mm. (183 g.) (R). [Pg.481]

There are large-scale operations using direct-heat resistance furnaces. These are mainly in melting bulk materials where the Hquid material serves as a uniform resistor. The material is contained in a cmcible of fixed dimensions which, coupled with a given resistivity of the material, fixes the total resistance within reasonable limits. The most common appHcation for this type of direct-heat electric resistance furnace is the melting of glass (qv) and arc furnaces for the melting of steel (qv). [Pg.138]

Tetraethylene glycol may be used direcdy as a plasticizer or modified by esterification with fatty acids to produce plasticizers (qv). Tetraethylene glycol is used directly to plasticize separation membranes, such as siHcone mbber, poly(vinyl acetate), and ceUulose triacetate. Ceramic materials utilize tetraethylene glycol as plasticizing agents in resistant refractory plastics and molded ceramics. It is also employed to improve the physical properties of cyanoacrylate and polyacrylonitrile adhesives, and is chemically modified to form polyisocyanate, polymethacrylate, and to contain siHcone compounds used for adhesives. [Pg.363]

Bois de Rose. Bois de rose oil is obtained by steam distillation of wood chips from South American rosewood trees, Aniba rosaeodora. The tree, a wild evergreen, grows mainly in the Amazon basin. The oil is used as obtained in perfumery for its sweet, woody-floral odor and as a source of linalool [78-70-6] (3), which it contains to the extent of 70%. Linalool distilled from bois de rose oil is also used directly in perfumery and for conversion to esters, eg, the acetate (1). [Pg.76]

The use of wind as a renewable energy source involves the conversion of power contained in moving air masses to rotating shaft power. These air masses represent the complex circulation of winds near the surface of Earth caused by Earth s rotation and by convective heating from the sun. The actual conversion process utilizes basic aerodynamic forces, ie, lift or drag, to produce a net positive torque on a rotating shaft, resulting in the production of mechanical power, which can then be used directly or converted to electrical power. [Pg.232]

The Cj plus bottoms from the demethanizer then go to the deethanizer. A propylene-propane bottoms product containing 90-92% propylene is obtained which may either be sold, used directly as propylene- 90, or further purified. The ethylene-ethane overhead from the deethanizer is separated in the splitter tower yielding a 99.8% overhead ethylene product at -25°F. The ethane bottoms at -l-18°F may either be sent to fuel gas or used as feed to an ethane cracking furnace. Overall ethylene recovery in these facilities is about 98%. The product is of very high purity with less than 50 parts per million of non-hydrocarbon contaminants and a methane plus ethane level below 250 ppm. [Pg.104]

On a smaller scale, the largest producer of iodine is Japan where it is extracted from. seaweed containing more than 0.05 parts per million. The most important industrial iodine compound is silver iodide used with silver bromide in photography. Iodine is important in medicine for treating thyroid problems by adding it to table salt. It is used directly as a disinfectant, and a component of d vs. Crystalline silver iodide is used for cloud seeding. [Pg.268]

The dried ether solution contains about 30 g (65%) of monoperphthalic acid and is approx. 0.26 to 0.28 M. It may be used directly for oxidation reactions (cf. Chapter 1, Section IV), or stored under refrigeration. Evaporation of the ether under reduced pressure (no heat) affords the crystalline product, mp 110° (dec). [Pg.154]

The process consists of a reactor section, continuous catalyst regeneration unit (CCR), and product recovery section. Stacked radial-flow reactors are used to minimize pressure drop and to facilitate catalyst recirculation to and from the CCR. The reactor feed consists solely of LPG plus the recycle of unconverted feed components no hydrogen is recycled. The liquid product contains about 92 wt% benzene, toluene, and xylenes (BTX) (Figure 6-7), with a balance of Cg aromatics and a low nonaromatic content. Therefore, the product could be used directly for the recovery of benzene by fractional distillation (without the extraction step needed in catalytic reforming). [Pg.178]

Multi-element analyses involving solvent extraction and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) have also been described. The extracts, containing metal-chelate complexes with sulphur-containing reagents, such as dithizone and diethyldithiocarbamate, were used directly for determination of the metals by HPLC.14... [Pg.174]

This procedure provides a convenient method for the esterification ol a wide variety of carboxylic acids. The reaction proceeds smoothly with sterically hindered acids6 and with acids which contain various functional groups. Esters are obtained in high purity using Kugelrohr distillation as the sole purification technique. In cases where traces of dichloromethane present no problems, the crude product is usually pure enough to be used directly in subsequent reactions. Methyl and ethyl ethers of phenols may also be prepared by this procedure (see Note 8). [Pg.62]

Complete characterization of arylboronic acids is often difficult because they are readily transformed into stable cyclic anhydrides called boroxines5 and other polymeric species. Arylboronic acids are also known to be hygroscopic. Thus, arylboronic acids are often prepared and used directly as a mixture of different entities. Commercial arylboronic acids will very often contain varying amount of anhydrides. [Pg.70]

The tetrahydrocannabinol carboxylic acid was extracted from the urine by means of a solid state extraction cartridge packed with a Cl 8 reverse phase (octyldecyldimethyl chains). As the urine sample was used direct, and contained no added solvent, the materials of interest were irreversibly adsorbed on the reverse phase solely by dispersive interactions. [Pg.202]

Diels Alder reaction of tosylimine 108 obtained by thermal [2+2] cycloaddition of p-toluensulphonylisocyanate and methylglioxylate [108] provides a method for synthesizing nitrogen-containing heterocycles. The tosylimine was not isolated but was used directly in situ in several cycloaddition reactions (Scheme 2.45) which were completely regioselective [109]. In the case... [Pg.72]
