Diethanolamine, diisopropanolamine, and isopropan olamine mixtures are less irritating to the skin than MEA and MIPA however, any one of them may produce severe skin irritation, even mild bums, if contact is prolonged or frequently repeated. Occasional short contact should not result in more than slight irritation. Undiluted triethanolamine and triisopropan olamine are slightly to moderately irritating to the skin. A bum may result from prolonged and repeated contact. Short occasional contact and solutions of less than 10% concentration are unlikely to cause more than very slight irritation, if any. [Pg.9]

The converter consists of 1,536 pairs of thermopiles made of silicon-germanium alloy (Si 85% by mass, Ge 15% by mass) with n- and p-conductivity. In this case, a high-resolution scanner is used to monitor the electrolytic cells in the tankhouse of a zinc refinery, where acres of acid-filled tanks contain pure metal anode starter plates onto which the refined metal is deposited electrolytically from unrefined cathodes in close proximity. When contact short circuits occur between electrode pairs in the tankhouse, metal production between the shorted pairs is halted, excessive current flows, and power is wasted. An IR scanner, mounted in a fiberglass environmental enclosure on the same overhead crane used to deposit and remove electrodes from the acid bath, maps the process and pinpoints the shorts, allowing service personnel to clear them with minimal exposure to toxic acid fumes. Now roll up the Carius tube (while still in a vertical position) in a strip of ordinary thick drying paper, and then place it in the heavy iron protector tube if the Carius tube is too short and tends to disappear within the iron tube, a short section of old glass tubing should first be placed in the iron tube so that the capillary of the Carius tube just projects. The function of the paper is to protect the Carius tubing from being scratched, and also (more important) to prevent the local overheating which would otherwise occur at places where the Carius tube is in direct contact with the iron tube. The bottoms from the solvent recovery (or a2eotropic dehydration column) are fed to the foremns column where acetic acid, some acryflc acid, and final traces of water are removed overhead. The overhead mixture is sent to an acetic acid purification column where a technical grade of acetic acid suitable for ester manufacture is recovered as a by-product. The bottoms from the acetic acid recovery column are recycled to the reflux to the foremns column. The bottoms from the foremns column are fed to the product column where the glacial acryflc acid of commerce is taken overhead. Bottoms from the product column are stripped to recover acryflc acid values and the high boilers are burned. The principal losses of acryflc acid in this process are to the aqueous raffinate and to the aqueous layer from the dehydration column and to dimeri2ation of acryflc acid to 3-acryloxypropionic acid. If necessary, the product column bottoms stripper may include provision for a short-contact-time cracker to crack this dimer back to acryflc acid (60). [Pg.154]

Dehydrogenation of Propionates. Oxidative dehydrogenation of propionates to acrylates employing vapor-phase reactions at high temperatures (400—700°C) and short contact times is possible. Although selective catalysts for the oxidative dehydrogenation of isobutyric acid to methacrylic acid have been developed in recent years (see Methacrylic ACID AND DERIVATIVES) and a route to methacrylic acid from propylene to isobutyric acid is under pilot-plant development in Europe, this route to acrylates is not presentiy of commercial interest because of the combination of low selectivity, high raw material costs, and purification difficulties. [Pg.156]
