Contact probability

Diffusion filtration is another contributor to the process of sand filtration. Diffusion in this case is that of Brownian motion obtained by thermal agitation forces. This compliments the mechanism in sand filtration. Diffusion increases the contact probability between the particles themselves as well as between the latter and the filter mass. This effect occurs both in water in motion and in stagnant water, and is quite important in the mechanisms of agglomeration of particles (e.g., flocculation). [Pg.252]

Mixtures containing sodium explode only on impact, while potassium explodes on contact with the chloride. Aluminium foil ignites after prolonged contact (probably after the surface layer of oxide has been dissolved). [Pg.1370]

As we said before, the contact resistance between normal metals should theoretically vary as T-1. Experimental results show dependence as T l [88], but also with larger exponents. For example, in the contact between Au/Au and Cu/Cu the contact resistance varies as T 13 [89], It is to be remarked that the Au/Au contact shows a thermal resistance 20 times smaller than that of the Cu/Cu contact (probably because of the presence of copper oxides). [Pg.113]

An example of the data, broken down into the 13 product groups, calculated tom the distillation and GC analysis of the hydrocracked liquids from CoMo-catalysed experiments is shown in Table II. It can be seen that the distribution of each of the contacts is similar, reflecting no dependence on repeat contact, even in the case of the first contaa which used tosh catalyst. This situation was generally observed for the other catalysts used and a summary of the r ts for the four catalysts is shown in Table III. The results for ZnW could be interpreted as a gradual decrease in conversion to material bpt <260 C or <275°C. However, this interpretation would depend highly on the reliability of the result for the fifth contact, the two runs of which were carried out on the same autoclave rather than one on each autoclave. The discussion further in the text does indicate that, at shorter contact times, conversions can be dependent upon the autoclave used, and the low value for this fifth contact probably results tom this dependence rather than a dependence on contact Hence it was concluded that, for all the catalysts, conversions to the various bpt materials were independent of repeat contact. [Pg.228]

In the literature, one can find other empirical or semi-empirical equations representing the kinetics of powder reactions. One can certainly take into account grain size distribution, contact probability, deviations from the spherical shape, etc. in a better way than Carter has done. Even more important are parameters such as evaporation rate, gas transport, surface diffusion, and interface transport in this context. As long as these parameters are neglected in quantitative work, the kinetic equations are inadequate. Nevertheless, considering its technological relevance, a particular type of powder reaction will be discussed in the next section. [Pg.158]

Since the sum of all contact probabilities of a segment type v is equal to the surface fraction 0 , i.e.,... [Pg.66]

Thus, in the case of vmax = 2, as originally considered by Guggenheim, there is only one independent contact probability,... [Pg.66]

This definition of interaction parameters is asymmetric, i.e., the interaction parameter of a segment i with a segment j is different from the interaction parameter of j with i. This is physically counter-intuitive, and has indeed caused a lot of discussion in the literature because it leads to a mathematical inconsistency in the contact probabilities of i and j [86]. Its explicit solution for general number of surface types made UNIQUAC easy to use in the times when computers where rare and slow. Therefore, UNIQUAC... [Pg.67]

PVA, close to 80°C. The polymer chains become mobile at the glass transition, allowing a partial re-organization of the nanotubes in the matrix and a modification of the conducting network. The polymer mobility allows some relaxation in the structure with possible better intertube contacts and loss of nanotube alignment which favors the contact probability. Both mechanisms can explain improvements of conductivity at the glass transition of the polymer. [Pg.335]

A more versatile way of applying free powder is in a gas stream. This has the potential advantages of more uniform distribution, penetration into less accessible positions, and re-supply during operation. Several applications of this technique have been described, and some are summarised in Table 9.2. These applications have apparently been restricted to the lubrication of rolling contacts, probably because of the inherent difficulty of applying satisfactory bonded or burnished films to rolling elements, and the problem of re-supply. [Pg.132]

SAFETY PROFILE Low toxicity by ingestion, inhalation, and skin contact. Probably irritating and narcotic in high concentration. Flammable or combustible when exposed to heat or flame can react with oxidizing materials. To fight fire, use foam, CO2, dry chemical. When heated to decomposition it emits acrid smoke and irritating fumes. [Pg.1180]

Due to extensive use, numerous types of applications, and the variety of formulations, human exposure may occur through all of the major pathways (dermal contact, ingestion, and inhalation). Dermal contact probably represents the pathway through which exposure most frequently occurs. [Pg.415]

This remarkable result may look surprising. Actually, we shall see later that renormalization theory leads to exactly the same result, and this shows that when trying to evaluate the interaction energy of a chain or contact probabilities one has to be very prudent, and that intuitive arguments cannot be trusted without discrimination. [Pg.312]

In fact, let us consider the contact probability P,( ) for large but finite values of z. In each case, this quantity is expressed as the ratio of two partition functions, and these functions can be re-expressed in terms of renormalized partition... [Pg.576]

Most of the rapeseed produced in the Orient is of the traditional kind, high in both erucic acid and glucosinolates. Little attention appears to have been given to the development of canola cultivars. Perhaps the need to increase food supplies discourages the deployment of resources for work on quality. Prakash (1980) suggests that alteration of the composition of the oil and meal is one of a number of possible future trends in India. The recent increase in international contacts probably will stimulate the development of canola cultivars in China. [Pg.157]

Conducting electrospun fiber mats based on PLA and PANI blends were reported by Picciani et al. It was observed that the resistivity values decreased with increasing PANI content and increased with increasing fiber diameter. The contact probability among fibers and the formation of the conductive pathways through the sample were introduced as a reason for that result. Thicker fibers had less contact probability in the same mat volume and an increase in fiber... [Pg.240]

Several works have shown that the aggregation of isotactic and syndiotactic chains leads to the formation of stereoeomplexes for which the iso/syndio stoichiometry is found equal to 1/2, probably with a structure composed of a double-stranded helix of a 30/4 helicoidal isotactic chain surroxmded by a 60/4 helicoidal syndiotactic chain. Syndiotactic PMMA self-aggregates exhibit similar structures, with conformations close to extended chains. Experimental data indicate that, in self-aggregated syndiotactic PMMA in solution, some of the ester groups are close in contact, probably in a double helix slructure with solvent molecules included in the cavities of inner- and inter-helices. Isotactic PMMA self-aggregates also exhibit conformational helix structures. [Pg.579]
