Contact melting

During loading the heat transfer fluid is heated by the supply from outside. It is then pumped to the bottom of the storage and released in small droplets. These droplets rise from the bottom due to their lower density, exchange heat with the PCM by direct contact, melt the PCM and are collected at the top to go back to the inner circuit. Unloading works with cold heat transfer fluid pumped in at the bottom, but otherwise the same. [Pg.303]

Substances in this category include Krypton, sodium chloride, and diamond, as examples, and it is not surprising that differences in detail as to frictional behavior do occur. The softer solids tend to obey Amontons law with /i values in the normal range of 0.5-1.0, provided they are not too near their melting points. Ionic crystals, such as sodium chloride, tend to show irreversible surface damage, in the form of cracks, owing to their brittleness, but still tend to obey Amontons law. Before this treatment, the cassiterite content of the ore is increased by removing impurities such as clay, by washing and by roasting which drives off oxides of arsenic and sulphur. The simplest form of melt extmsion is the use of a slot die to form the molten polymer into a thin flat profile which is then quenched immediately to a solid state (Fig. 1). This is usually done by contacting the hot web very quickly on a chilled roU or dmm. A liquid quenching bath may be used ia place of or contiguous to the chill roU. Depending on the polymer type or formulation, the quenched web is generally substantially amorphous. In some cases, the web may be drawn down ia thickness by overdriving the quenching roU relative to the extmsion velocity. [Pg.379]

Iodine Pentafluoride. Iodine pentafluoride is produced by the reaction of iodine and fluorine. Because iodine has a high melting poiat, the reaction is either performed ia a solvent or the reaction is maintained at a temperature where the iodine is Hquid. In a continuous process usiug a solvent (104), ca 1% I2 is dissolved iu IF and passed to a reactor where it is contacted with F2 gas. For primary insulation or cable jackets, high production rates are achieved by extmding a tube of resin with a larger internal diameter than the base wke and a thicker wall than the final insulation. The tube is then drawn down to the desked size. An operating temperature of 315—400°C is preferred, depending on holdup time. The surface roughness caused by melt fracture determines the upper limit of production rates under specific extmsion conditions (76). Corrosion-resistant metals should be used for all parts of the extmsion equipment that come in contact with the molten polymer (77). [Pg.361]

Spin Welding. Spin welding is an efficient technique for joining circular surfaces of similar materials. The matching surfaces are rotated at high speed relative to each other and then brought into contact. Frictional heat melts the interface and, when motion is stopped, the weld is allowed to soHdify under pressure. [Pg.370]

Powder Coating. Teflon PEA is also available in a finely divided powder form. It can be used to produce thin layers on various surfaces by heating these surfaces above the melting point of PEA and then bringing the powder in contact with them.
