Spin-welding

Spin welding is used to weld axisymmetric joints. The lower component of the assembly is held stationary in fixtures, while the upper component is both rotated and pressed normally against the fixed component. The upper component typically has clocking features that allow it to be driven by the drive spindle. The simplest way to think about spin welding and indeed the simplest way to accomplish it is to consider a drill press spinning a part which is subsequently pressed down on a stationary part fixed to the press table. Spin welding can not only create hermetic seals, but it can also encapsulate other components within the volume created by the assembly. [Pg.269]


Spin Welding. Spin welding is an efficient technique for joining circular surfaces of similar materials. The matching surfaces are rotated at high speed relative to each other and then brought into contact. Frictional heat melts the interface and, when motion is stopped, the weld is allowed to soHdify under pressure. [Pg.370]

TPEs can be bonded to other materials by adhesive, heat bonding, electromagnetic filling, radio frequency, heat-sealing lamination, friction and spin welding, and ultrasonic welding. In friction or spin-welding of thermoplastics, one of the two pieces to be jointed is fixed in the chuck of a modified lathe and rotated at high speed while the other piece is held against it until frictional heat causes the polymer to flow. Spin welded ABS joints can have straight 90° mating surfaces, or surface can be angled, molded in a V-shape, or flanged. The most important factor in the quality of the weld is the joint design.
