Corporate responsibility auditing can also identify how capital has been allocated across departments and business units of the company and the level and types of risks to which the capital is exposed. An experienced audit team will advise on whether risks in one part of the company may exacerbate or ameliorate those in another and, in consultation with employees and managers, recommend process improvements, which the audit will undoubtedly yield, where risks are too high. This information can provide management with a clearer understanding of acceptable tolerance levels for key value drivers, and reliable data with which to respond proactively to shifts in the work environment, key markets, and in society.

In addition to consulting with employees, it is important that management makes sure that employees know that they have a right to access to information to do with process safety. The fact that PHAs are specifically identified within this element has prompted many companies to make sure that operators participate in the PHAs, often on a rotating basis. 

Evaluations of the workplace are necessary to ensure that the written respiratory protection program is being properly implemented. This includes consulting with employees to ensure that they are using the respirators properly. Evaluations must be conducted as necessary to ensure that the provisions of the current written program are being effectively implemented and that it continues to be effective.

You may conduct the audit alone or using a team. (See the section Structured and documented inspections earher.) Just as for inspections, it is important to consult with employees, employee representatives, and health and safety committees on the audit process, design, development, workplace approach, evaluation and reporting. That does not mean they physically conduct the audit. 

Under Robens-based health and safety acts, there is a reqrrirement for employers to consult with employees on plarmed changes which may affect their health, safety and welfare. If the necessary changes cannot be made without reducing staff, then every effort should be made to redeploy people or provide equitable retrenchment packages. 

The policy should be the result of consultation with employees and must have the commitment of top management, so it is appropriate that it is signed by the management. The policy is the basis for setting objectives and targets for OHS in an organization.

It is important to evaluate the risks and decide who may be harmed and how this is likely to occur. The threats may be from the public or co-workers at the workplace or it may be as a result of visiting the homes of customers. Consultation with employees or other people at risk will improve their commitment to control measures and will make the precautions much more effective. The level of training and information provided, together with the general working environment and the design of the job, all have a significant influence on the level of risk.
