This book claims to reveal the secrets of the physical work of the philosophers stone, however, though it stays close to its theme it uses metaphorical and philosophical allusions to the process, rather than approaching it directly in physical terms. The author indicates in the preface the reason for the title of his book "We therefore... do raise this knowledge, buried and obscured under the pretext of the Tomb of the most wise Semiramis, formerly Queen of Babylon..."... [Pg.104]

Robotics has been defined by Zenie [S] as an extension of programmable computers to do physical work, as well as processing data. Instrument systems using robotization and programmable computers are currently being used to improve productivity in scientific laboratories. Analysts need to identify samples, weigh, dilute, concentrate, extract, filter, evaporate, manipulate and analyse them. [Pg.168]

Freemasons use the tools of stonemasons, not for physical work but to contemplate as symbols in their philosophical mystical practice, in the same way that Rosicrucians practice alchemy without the chemical experiments. In the Masonic ritual of initiation, a Mason acts out the death of Hiram and is reborn to the lodge. The twentieth century... [Pg.103]

Mechanical devices cover a wide range of types of tools. In general, they are tools that relate to physical work and are governed by mechanical forces and movements. You can usually see what they do and how they work—as opposed to, say, a light switch or a battery, which are electrical devices. Some tools are used to directly accomplish a specific task, as when you use a hand saw to cut a piece of wood. Others, such as pulleys and gears, may be used indirectly to accomplish certain tasks that would be possible without the device but are easier with it. Still others, such as gauges, only provide feedback information on the operation of other mechanical devices. You see and use mechanical devices many times each day, so there is no reason to be intimidated by a mechanical aptitude section on the exam. [Pg.204]

The [C]PAT tests your potential to complete a recruit academy, says Bill Wittmer, academy director of the Oakland (California) Fire Department. If you have problems in the [C]PAT, then you are going to have a problem in the recruit academy, which is harder and runs 10 to 16 weeks. That s where you are throwing ladders, pulling hose, doing physical work all day long. They re tough. ... [Pg.330]

To perform physical work involves the expenditure of energy and leads to loss of water and electrolytes in the form of sweat. The progressive depletion of energy reserves and the loss of water both accelerate the inevitable onset of fatigue. [Pg.353]

Just as energy is hard to define in everyday terms and comes in many forms, so too with work. In physics, work (w) is defined as the force (F) that produces the movement of an object times the distance moved (d) ... [Pg.302]

Relate energy change to V I physical work When a person does work, the person s energy diminishes, so when a system does work, iv is negative and AE is negative. [Pg.305]

As students of the hermetic tradition we all recognise that the alchemical work takes place on many different levels -the physical work with substances, the experience and manipulation of etheric forces, the interior work on the soul, as well as the spiritual and planetary/cosmic aspects of alchemy. These different facets of the work interpenetrate and overlap each other. Indeed, in a sense, if we are to make any progress in alchemy, we must pursue the different facets concurrently, paralleling interior development with experience of the outer work. One symbol that belongs to all these different realms of this work is that of the alchemical vessel. In this article I would like to outline some ways in which we can use this symbol in our inner exercises. [Pg.10]

It may be considered established that under no circumstances could these cellars be entered without a gas mask in less than 3-4 hours after the beginning of the gassing. Hard physical work with gas masks, but without protective clothes, i.e., the alleged removal of the bodies, would not have been possible in less than 1V2 to 2 hours. [Pg.226]

According to Schmidt,422 relaxed humans inhale some 14 liters of air per minute. This can increase up to 50 to 60 liters per minute in case of heavy physical work, in extreme cases even up to 100 to 120 liters. [Pg.232]
