In 1957, Townes developed the equation that showed that this same process could also obtain much smaller wavelengths (in the infrared and visible light range). Townes collaborated with Aithur Schawlow, a research assistant in his laboratoiy from 1949 to 1951, who then moved on to become a physicist at Bell Labs where Townes was still doing consulting work. Wlien he was a postdoctoral fellow at Columbia, Schawlow met Aurelia, Townes younger sister, who had come there to study singing. Soon the two married. 

Even without the current outsourcing trends, it has always been difficult for service companies to find sufficient numbers of well-trained, experienced, and motivated field representatives. This is because the range of water treatment problems and potential solutions are very wide and the business involves the marketing of many different types of chemicals and equipment, coupled with consulting work and innovative trouble shooting.

The revised NAP submitted in April 2004 reflected updated growth projections for the power sector, industrial sectors and the services sector, based on input from stakeholders and modification of the model itself, but not the results of the consultants work on projections. The updated projections indicated that 2010 BAU emissions would be 7 Mt CO2 higher than had previously been foreseen. PI insurance with any form of pollution exclusion for environmental consultants is not worth the paper it is printed on. Any consultancy that is involved in environmental consultancy work must have the security of knowing that they do not have such an exclusion on their policy. It must be questioned whether a PI policy with any sort of pollution exclusion will provide a sufficient degree of indemnity should the worse happen and a claim is made against the insured and then hence against their PI insurance.
