In 1957, Townes developed the equation that showed that this same process could also obtain much smaller wavelengths (in the infrared and visible light range). Townes collaborated with Aithur Schawlow, a research assistant in his laboratoiy from 1949 to 1951, who then moved on to become a physicist at Bell Labs where Townes was still doing consulting work. Wlien he was a postdoctoral fellow at Columbia, Schawlow met Aurelia, Townes younger sister, who had come there to study singing. Soon the two married. 

Furthermore, a major new town development around the former 1000 m deep Monktonhall Colliery in Midlothian, Scotland, is in the planning stage. Mine water is being seriously assessed as a possible source of heating and cooling requirements for the town, whose peak heat energy demand could reach 30 MW (ENDS 2002).

The need for redundancy in the culture system needs to be assessed. Failure of a well pump that brings up water to supply a static pond system may not be a serious problem in countries where new pumps can be purchased in a nearby town. However, it can be disastrous in developing countries where new pumps and pump parts are often not available, but must be ordered from another country. Several weeks or months may pass before the situation can be remedied unless the culturist maintains a selection of spares. 

Low Temperature Carbonization. Low temperature carbonization, when the process does not exceed 700°C, was mainly developed as a process to supply town gas for lighting purposes as well as to provide a smokeless (devolatilized) soHd fuel for domestic consumption (30). However, the process by-products (tars) were also found to be valuable insofar as they served as feedstocks (qv) for an emerging chemical industry and were also converted to gasolines, heating oils, and lubricants (see Gasoline and OTHER motor fuels Lubrication and lubricants) (31). 

The report gives eonsideration to the eontribution of the seientists from Russia to the development of XRF analysis in the period from 1999 to nowadays. The state of XRF in the earlier period was diseussed in the reviews. Presented in detail are only the most important advanees eonneeted to the speeial features of XRF method. The reviews and the monographs, published in this period, the Conferenees on XRF problems, held in Russia, the defended dissertations are separately diseussed (-380 papers, 5 monographs and 17 dissertations). The statistieal analysis of the publieations on XRF is presented (the distribution in the Russian and foreign journals and in the towns Moseow, Irkutsk, Novosibirsk, St. Petersburg and others). 

The son of a tailor, Joseph Fourier was a member of a large family. Both of his parents died by the time he was nine. His education began at a local, church-run, military school, where he quickly showed talent in his studies and especially in mathematics. His school persuaded him to tram as a priest. While preparing to take holy orders he taught his fellow novices mathematics. Fourier may well have entered the priesthood, but due to the French Revolution new priests were banned from taking holy orders. Instead he returned to his home town of Auxerre and taught at the militaiy school. His friend and mathematics teacher, Bonard, encouraged him to develop his mathematical research, and at the end of 1789 Fourier travelled to Paris to report on this research to the Academic des Sciences.
