Construction biology definitions

Much of the interest in using predictive modeling of human Pb exposures concerns mechanistic, i.e., biokinetic, models. Biokinetic models differ from site-specific or multisite ad hoc/slope factor models in a number of important ways. Eirst, they are constructed (by definition) within a computational and biological/kinetic framework. That framework specifies inclusion of all identified parameters representing mechanisms by which environmental Pb is deposited in and removed from human organs and tissues. Mechanistic models are structured to be much more complex than the regression models... 

Biological systems are, by definition, multicomponent systems. One should keep in mind the difficulties of constructing molecular level pictures that satisfactorily describe systems such as a protein in a reverse micelle or a protein in a concentrated aqueous salt solution, which are certainly much simpler than anhydrobiotic organisms, for example. It is not clear to what extent the water of the hydration shell can be replaced by a third component (e.g., lipid) or what effect such replacement has on protein or enzyme properties. 

Cohort Definition and Follow-Up Period A variety of sources of information are used to identify workers exposed to a particular workplace hazard, to construct an occupational history, and to complete the collection of information necessary for tracing (see below). It is essential that the cohort be well defined and that criteria for eligibility are strictly followed. This requires that a clear statement be made about membership of the cohort so that it is easy to decide whether an employee is a member or not. It is also important that the follow-up period be carefully defined. For instance, it is readily apparent that the follow-up period should not start before exposure has occurred. Furthermore, it is uncommon for the health effect of interest to manifest itself immediately after exposure, and allowance for an appropriate biological induction (or latency) period may need to be made when interpreting the data. 

The Tavema Project11 is an example of a domain-aware workflow toolkit that helps to define and perform these biological analyses and transformations. Tavema can handle both proprietary and XML-based data formats and uses XML itself to describe the workflows and data format transformations. Tavema also supports Web Service Definition Language (WSDL) and Web Services integration to exploit a services-oriented architecture when executing workflows, like the one described here. The services orientation that Tavema is built around works well with the services-based architecture presented here. Because Tavema interfaces with services (both informatics services and grid services like resource managers and security services), it is well suited for construction of the kinds of complex research pipelines common in bioinformatics research. 

The person who views brain disease as a material entity or process and mental disease as a nonmaterial construct, and who nevertheless wants to defend the disease status of mental illness, faces a dilemma. Either he must conclude that the term mental illness is a metaphor or he must recast the definition of illness from biological terms to socioethical terms. 5 Many psychiatrists recognize that they do just that, but they do not acknowledge that by so doing they redefine the concept of disease.
