A longwall shearer cuts swatches of coal 750 feet long and 28 inches thick, 800 feet underground at Consolidation Coal Company s Blacks /ille 2 mine. (Corbis-Bettmann)... [Pg.258]

CSF [Consol Synthetic Fuels] A two-stage coal liquifaction process. In the first stage, the coal is extracted with process-derived oil and the ash removed. In the second, the extract is catalytically hydrogenated. Piloted by the Consolidation Coal Company, Cresap, WV, from 1963 to 1972. See also H-Coal, SRC, Synthoil. [Pg.75]

Despite considerable effort to understand the chemical nature of the organic and inorganic portions of coal, and substantial advances in instrumentation and methodologies, much of coal s chemical nature remains intractable. This paper reviews methods and their limitations for the determination of specific minerals in coal, and presents results of efforts at Consolidation Coal Company to develop FTIR methods for routine coal mineralogy. [Pg.44]

The Pittsburg and Midway Coal Mining Company provided the SRC-II process products that were used as feeds in these studies. They were produced in the Fort Lewis, Washington, pilot plant from a West Virginia coal (Pittsburg Seam, Blacksville No. 2 Mine of the Consolidated Coal Company). [Pg.82]

H-Coal naphthas and distillates derived from Illinois No. 6 (Burning Star Mine) and Wyodak coals were supplied by Hydrocarbon Research, Inc. The naphthas and distillates were blended in the appropriate proportions to obtain a whole syncrude derived from each coal. Properties of these syncrudes are shown in Table I. For comparison, Table I also shows properties of the SRC-II syncrude used in the study described in the previous chapter. The SRC-II syncrude was derived from a West Virginia coal (Pittsburgh Seam, Blacksville No. 2 Mine of the consolidated Coal Company). The H-Coal and SRC-II syncrudes are not directly comparable because the coals used to derive these syncrudes differ. [Pg.121]

We thank Simon C. Brassell of Stanford University, Ed L. Obermiller of Consolidation Coal Company, and Otto P. Strausz of the University of Alberta for serving on the organizing committee for the symposium and as advisers during the preparation of this volume. [Pg.7]

Finally, financial support that made it possible for many foreign speakers to participate in the symposium is most gratefiilly acknowledged. Substantial contributions were made by the following Amoco Production Company, Arco Oil and Gas Company, Conoco Inc., Consolidation Coal Company, Mobil Research and Development Corporation, Unocal Corporation, and the American Chemical Society Petroleum Research Fund. [Pg.7]

The Pittsburgh Seam (No. 8) Bituminous coal is from the Ireland Mine of the Consolidation Coal Company. [Pg.243]

In 1968, 78 coal miners were killed in Farmington, West Virginia, when an explosion ripped through the Consolidated Coal Company Mine. Only a few miles from the infamous Monongah site, this disaster devastated the whole community. A town, a state, and a nation were outraged and called for federal intervention into the conditions killing citizens in the workplace. [Pg.24]

For many pipes, C/C is considered by Wasp et al. (1977) to be 0.08 77/from the top of the pipe. Wasp et al. (1977) examined the distribution of concentration of The Consolidation Coal Company s Ohio coal pipeline at a height of 8% from the bottom of the conduit and at 8% from the top of the conduit they reinterpreted the work of IsmaU (1951) and devised the following equation ... [Pg.191]

Secretary of Labor v. Consolidation Coal Company, 2000. The decision reads The confusion resulting from this inadequate communication and coordination was itself a contributing cause of the explosion. There was a serious lapse of judgment among Consol personnel in not ordering or ensuring that methane checks were made underneath the production shaft cap. ... [Pg.61]
