Conference abstracts citations

Citations It is rare to see citations in conference abstracts. If a citation cannot be avoided, a full reference must be included in the abstract (see chapter 17). 

Using the organizational structure developed in Writing on Your Own task 8B, write the first full draft of your conference abstract, title, and author list. Remember to define abbreviations and acronyms that are critical to understanding your work, incorporate keywords into your abstract and title, and use tense and voice in conventional ways. Avoid the use of citations. Make sure that you write for the appropriate audience.

Papers presented at a session may appear as a one-print document, as individual papers, in electronic format, or only as abstracts. Most of the engineering conferences fall into specific fields of interest. There are resources and guidelines that help develop the search strategy for locating any conference or paper within a conference. Two titles available through online subscriptions are the Directory of Published Proceedings and Conference Proceedings Citation Index (ISTP). The directory identifies the conference, the location, and its sponsor.

Chemical Abstracts Service One major source of scientific and technical information for the chemical industry is Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) of Columbus, Ohio. CAS is a self-sustaining division of the American Chemical Society (ACS) and monitors new developments published in the world s chemical literature. In a recent five year period, CAS monitored over 15,000 journals, periodicals, conferences and technical reports gathered from over 150 nations and published in over 50 languages. CAS also monitors the patents from 26 major countries of the world for new chemical developments. CAS reviews this literature for new information published related to chemical engineering and over 75 different fields of chemistry. Each week for the past 74 years CAS has published the abstracts or summaries pertaining to the new developments cited in the world s chemical literature. On the average, over 500,000 citations are being added to the CAS information base each year. 

Abstracts and indexes provide citation information title of an article or conference paper, authors, title of the periodical or conference, volnme issue, date, and pages in which the article or conference paper appears. Abstracts provide a brief description of the article or conference paper s content. Increasingly, digital abstracts and indexes provide access to the full text of the article or conference paper. 

Fuel and Energy Abstracts. Available via ScienceDirect, also published bi-monthly in paper copy. Provides summaries of world literature on scientific, technical, environmental, and commercial aspects of fuel and energy. Covers over 800 international publications, monographs, conference proceedings, reports, surveys, and statistical analyses. Number of abstracts per issue can vary from 500 to 800. The online indexing is inconsistent. Individual abstracts are indexed in most issues. However, in newer issues, the citations are buried under headings, such as Liquid Euels, Heat Pumps, and Fuel Science and Technology, and cannot be retrieved without a secondary keyword search of the actual subject index of a particular issue.
