Research on the identification of vanilloid antagonists has been pursued more intensively in industry than in academia. Thus, a SciFinder search for new chemical entities endowed with this type of activity pulled out 34 entries from the proprietary literature, and only 14 from journal articles during the period January 2004 June 2006. The patent literature can be difficult to evaluate and compare with the published data. Bioactivity is often not disclosed (or commented), and activity can be broadly claimed for a series of lead structures without specifying their optimal substitution. On the other hand, analysis of the patent literature does not only complement the published data, but also offers a preview of information that will be eventually disclosed and detailed in journals. Given the relevance of proprietary literature in the realm of vanilloids research, the main trends emerging from its analysis will be briefly summarized. 

Any comprehensive survey of impurities in pharmaceuticals is completely beyond the scope of this contribution. A SciFinder search using the terminology pharmaceutical impurities uncovered 1933 citations. Sorting those citations by year gave a rather interesting picmre of the importance of this area of investigation. 

The increasing interest in thalidomide (1) during the last decade is clearly represented by the number of hits in the scientific literature dealing with the word thalidomide under SciFinder search. It is worth mentioning that most of the documents were published in the last 10 years (Fig. 2). Most of them concerned the biological, physiological, and clinical aspects of thalidomide (1) and they are now systematically well summarized [1-14]. However, review of the synthetic side of thalidomide (1) is still rare. In this review, we focus on the synthesis of racemic thalidomide (1), which is now commercially... 

To gather this information, we relied primarily on SciFinder Scholar to search for key words, topics, or authors in the Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) database. SciFinder searches CAS s CAplus, which is their main database of abstracts of journal articles and other literature. The search task was not straightforward. Whereas abstracts of individual articles are often long and detailed, the descriptions of books are minimal. Most unfortunately, individual chapters in many multiauthored books have not always been well abstracted by CAS often the chapters are listed with little more than the number of references cited. 

A SciFinder search performed on 26 July 2007 gave no answers for 1,2-diazocines, 1,2-thiazocines, or 1,2-oxathiocins. 

A SciFinder search performed on 12 October 2007 gave no answer for 2//-1,3-thiazocines and 4//-l,3-oxathiocins. 

The introduction of catalytic oxidations using oxygen from air is of much interest and breakthrough discoveries and spectacular progress have been achieved in research on catalytic asymmetric oxidations since the early part of the last century [3-5]. The increased number of publications per year in this area, as extracted from the electronically accessible literature in a SciFinder search, is shown in Figure... 

To illustrate how STN is used, an on-line tutorial is available. A few on-line windows from a SciFinder search are provided to illustrate how searches can be done. This presentation is by no means complete or intended as an alternative to the actual tutorial. Indeed, one could not use SciFinder properly after simply reading this discussion. The intent is to illustrate some features that are available and to present an overview of the use of this important tool.

In one of the original papers of the Vivanco laboratory [46], the mechanism of action of (-)-catechin was linked to induction of ROS. This is debatable since catechins are well known antioxidants (e.g. [62]). In fact, more than 1500 papers mention catechin as an antioxidant (SciFinder search, as of February 2008). Finally, Qin et al. [63] found no evidence of root exudate-mediated allelopathy with Centaurea solstitialis, but the authors apparently did not determine if this species produces ( )-catechin. If it were to produce similar amounts of ( )-catechin as C. maculosa, it would be strong evidence of the lack of allelo-pathic influence of these compounds.

If one considers only diacetylenes not in a ring, with a molecular weight less than 700 and conforming to the general structure RCH2CCCCCH2R, a Scifinder search (October, 2004) reveals 3565 have been reported in the literature.

Once the phrase has been processed into a set of related terms/Registry Numbers, SciFinder searches them in as many ways as possible. The objective is to return some references to the user. The first type of search is with sentence logic. Even when this is successful, it will try other logical operators, various term combinations, etc., i.e., it proceeds from specific...
