Defects of small republics not present in the large confederate or compound republic created by the Constitution (Hamilton)... 

We have been much encouraged by the careful assessment and comments on individual chapters by numerous colleagues not only throughout the U.K. but also in Australia, Canada, Denmark, the Federal Republic of Germany, Japan, the U.S.A and several other countries. We believe that this new approach will be widely welcomed as a basis for discussing the very diverse behaviour of the chemical elements and their compounds.

The third chapter of this volume is concerned with mono- and diazaquinones. S. R dl (Prague, Czech Republic) reviews compounds that contain one nitrogen or two nitrogen atoms directly within the quinonoid ring, a subject that has not been previously summarized in a comprehensive manner. This is in distinction to the several specialized reviews of quinones themselves. Heterocyclic quinones, in the sense of compounds in which the quinonoid ring is fused to a heterocyclic ring, were covered in Volume 45 of our series in 1989.

Amino-4-mercapto-6-methylpyridazine (10) (pyridazine Sj CAS 18591-81-6) represents another newly discovered antipyretic, analgesic and antiinflammatory agent [72], It was the most effective compound among several mercaptopyridazines tested in the German Democratic Republic [73-75] the acute toxicity was found to be low (LD50 x 10 mmol/kg p.o. mouse) [74]. 

Acetamides of type (83) derived from various /V-heterocycles have been prepared and investigated for antileukaemic activity in the German Democratic Republic. Within this series, the pyridazine derivative (84) was found to be the only active compound inhibiting the growth of L-1210 mouse cells in vitro (IDS0 10 4 mol/I) [297],... 

Termites are a serious problem in several known limited areas and are on the increase. White refined arsenic has been used in Cuba with some success but has not resulted in control. Treatment of 13,000 infested acres required 1800 pounds of arsenic in 1953. Dieldrin and similar compounds appear more promising at present. Aldrin (hexachloro-diendomethano-hexahydronaphthalene) has been used at the rate of 2 pounds per acre on 750 acres in the Dominican Republic with good results. Termites do not seem to be a general hazard at this time. 

We concentrate our effort to phytoremediation of 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) as the main contaminant of former and present ammunition factories and to nitroesters (PETN, NG) in the Czech Republic and in Germany. In our experiments, we studied the uptake, degradation and distribution of these compounds in plants and its degradation products in plant tissues and its subsequent utilisation for real application both for soil and waste-waters cleaning. 

Artemisinin ( qinghaosu ) (18), a sesquiterpene lactone antimalarial compound with an endoperoxide group, discovered in the Peoples Republic of China as a constituent of Artemisia annua L., has created great interest in the biomedical community, owing to its unique mechanism of action on the heme complex. Artemisinin serves as an option for the treatment of chloroquine (4l)-resistant malaria and is used in some Asian countries as an antimalarial. However, the use of artemisinin as a single agent anti-malarial is a potential risk since the malaria parasite may become resistant to this compound class. 

The contouring of the calender rolls by grinding in order to counteract the natural deflection and the deflection set up by the work being done with rubber stock load is a precision job and in most cases it is done by trial and error method. The nip pressure per inch width of the roll for most rubber compounds has been extensively studied by scientists in the Dunlop Rubber Company [ref Paper "Estimation of the shear deformation exerted by a roll-mill upon a rubber compound" by T.S. Ng, G. Angerer, Dunlop Forschung, Dunlop-Strasse 2, Hanau, Federal Republic of Germany, Presented at the Jahrestagung der... 

Chromium occurs chiefly as chromite (ferrous chromite). Fe(CrOy)-. in Zimbabwe, the Republic of South Africa, the former USS.R, New Caledonia. India. Philippine Islands. Japan, Turkey. Greece. Cuba, and California. (I I Healing chromite in the elcclric furnace with carbon yields ferrochrume for alloys, and (2) when chromite is heated with sodium earhonale and nilralc. sodium chromate is formed, which is then extracted with HyO. This is the substance from which chromium compounds are obtained. See also Chromite. 

Tantalum is found in a number of oxide minerals, which almost invariably also contain niobium (columbium). The most important tantalum-bearing minerals are tantalite and columbite. which are variations of the same natural compound (Fe, Mn)(Ta, Nb Og. Much of the tantalum concentrates has been obtained as a byproduct from tin mining in recent years, tin slags, which are a byproduct of the smelting of cassiierite ores, such as those found in the Republic of Congo. Nigeria, Portugal. Malaya, and Thailand have been an important raw material source for tantalum. 

The uranium ore from Elliot Lake, Canada, contains yttrium and lanthanides (see Uranium AND URANIUM COMPOUNDS). In the Jiangxi province of the People s Republic of China a large reserve of a rare-earth-containing day contains over 1,000,000 t of REO. This ore is characterized by having a low cerium content (<5%) but a high content in samarium, europium, terbium, and yttrium compared to the main base REO ores (Table 6). 

Our third contribution is by Alexander Sadimenko, of the University of Fort Hare, (Republic of South Africa) and continues the series of organo-metallic complexes of heterocycles. The present contribution covers a broad class of chelating ligands constituted by phosphinopyridines and related compounds. These interesting ligands possess both hard (pyridine nitrogen) and soft (phosphorus) coordination sites, which provides them with special properties in coordination chemistry.

Imports and Exports. The United States has long been a significant importer of vanadium slags, but imports of pentoxide were negligible until they rose quickly to 850 metric tons in 1974, and 2000 t in 1975 (mosdy from the Republic of South Africa). Pentoxide imports then declined to 1400 t in 1980 with Finland being the main and South Africa the minor suppliers. In recent years, U.S. imports of ammonium and potassium vanadates and of other vanadium compounds have been 100—200 t/yr, mainly from the U.K., Germany, and the Republic of South Africa.
