Thiamine, whose structure is shown in Figure 18.17, is known as vitamin Bj and is essential for the prevention of beriberi, a nervous system disease that has occurred in the Far East for centuries and has resulted in considerable sickness and death in these countries. (As recently as 1958, it was the fourth leading cause of death in the Philippine Islands.) It was shown in 1882 by the director-general of the medical department of the Japanese nayt that beriberi could be prevented by dietary modifications. Ten years later, Christiaan Eijkman, a Dutch medical scientist working in Java, began research that eventually showed that thiamine was the... [Pg.588]

This fungicide has been used in Brazil, Ecuador, Puerto Rico, Fernando Po, the West Indies, Philippine Islands, Central American countries, Cameroons, and Nigeria. From Brazil it was recently reported (27) that Bordeaux mixture had only a slight advantage over other compounds. Good results were, however, obtained with Cupro-san in combination with prophylactic measures. From studies conducted in Trinidad, Baker (3) concludes that control of black pod by sanitation and cultural methods is unlikely to be successful, whereas control might be practicable and profitable with spray and modern methods. [Pg.25]

This handsome mineral has also been found in Brazil, Hungary, the Philippine Islands, Arizona, and Tasmania. The Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia has some superb specimens of it from Dundas, Tasmania. [Pg.277]

Aqueous environments support countless species. Soft corals, sponges, bryozoans, and algae compete for space on this reef substrate off the Philippine Islands. [Pg.70]

Chromium occurs chiefly as chromite (ferrous chromite). Fe(CrOy)-. in Zimbabwe, the Republic of South Africa, the former USS.R, New Caledonia. India. Philippine Islands. Japan, Turkey. Greece. Cuba, and California. (I I Healing chromite in the elcclric furnace with carbon yields ferrochrume for alloys, and (2) when chromite is heated with sodium earhonale and nilralc. sodium chromate is formed, which is then extracted with HyO. This is the substance from which chromium compounds are obtained. See also Chromite. [Pg.380]

Van Gelder and Schlatter (Ref 5) state that a US version of Thorite contained AN mixed with nitro aromatic compds. Thorite was at first highly commended (Ref 1) but a later report criticized it adversely due to the failure to obtain a uniform degree of detonation or expin, which appears to be inherent in this class of explosives (Ref 2), More likely the defect lay in the strength of the fuze, AN expls requiring an exceptionally heavy detonator. In spite of the adverse opinion of the Bureau of Ordnance, the Congress appropriated funds for the purchase of Thorite (Ref 3), and shells filled with this material were used in the Philippine Islands during the Spanish-American War Refs 1) Anon, Annual Report of the Chief of Ordnance, US Army (1899), 22 2) Ibid... [Pg.717]

Yet another product of the sea is a huge oyster found south of the Philippine island Palawan. It is called Pinctada maxima and can weigh up to ten kilogrammes. This oyster produces a shell which is as strong as reinforced vibrated concrete. Like coral, this shell is made of calcium carbonate. The inside is covered with mother-of-pearl which cannot be digested by human bone cells. Mother-of-pearl consists for approximately 66% of calcium carbonate and for about 31% of water. The rest is conchioline, a though and homy product. [Pg.260]

Trenches are long, narrow, canyon-like structures, most often found adjacent to a continental margin. They occur much more commonly in the Pacific than in any of the other oceans. The deepest trench on Earth is the Marianas trench, which runs from the coast of Japan south and then west toward the Philippine Islands. Its deepest spot is 36,152 ft (11,022 m) below sea level and it runs a distance of about 1,580 mi (2,550 km). The longest trench is located along the coast of Peru and Chile. Its total length is 3,700 mi (5,900 km) and it has a maximum depth of 26,420 ft (8,055 m). [Pg.635]

Travelers became aware that entheogenic mushrooms were common on the island of Bali, they communicated this message to their friends, and eventually Balinese natives learned the economic value of the mushrooms. By the early 1980s, magic mushroom omelets and smoothies had become popular at several resort locations in Thailand, Nepal, and on both coasts of the Indian continent. It was recently reported that some species of magic mushrooms are now being served to tourists in the Philippine Islands. [Pg.60]

Bioassay-guided fractionation of an aqueous extract from a Philippine Islands collection of the soft coral Lohophytum spp. yielded cembranoid diterpenes, Fig. (3), which exhibited moderate HIV-inhibitory activity in a cell-based in vitro anti-HIV assay [44], while new isomalabaricane triterpenes. Fig. (4), have been isolated from the sponge Stelletta spp. [45]. Other anti-HIV diterpenes also included the dolabellane diterpenes isolated from the Brazilian brown algae Dictyota pfaffi [46] and Dictyota menstrualis [47]. To investigate the effect of these diterpenes in the reverse transcription of the viral genomic RNA, the recombinant HIV-1 RT was assayed in vitro in the presence of each compound. All compounds inhibited the RNA-dependent DNA-polymerase activity of HIV-1 RT and consequently virus replication. [Pg.107]

Germany, Mexico, the Philippine Islands, South America, England, Central America, Canada and Bermuda have been our best customers for whiskey. Following prohibition, Bahama Islands, Bermuda, Canada, Cuba, England and Mexico all received large shipments, most of which probably found its way back to us via the bootleggers. See Table 3,4. [Pg.328]
