Compostable coating

The new biodegradable cheese coatings (Fig. 5) are produced from poly (HAmcl) latex based on saturated fatty acids and are easily composted. 

Ecovio FS Paper is also a compound of Ecoflex FS and PLA with a very high content of renewable resources. This grade was optimized for extrusion coating of paperboard. It can be processed on standard PE equipment and shows an excellent adhesion to card board and paper. The Ecovio coating forms a barrier for fat vegetable and mineral oil, liquid and aroma. Applications of choice are compostable paper cups for hot and cold drinks, freezer boxes or paper wraps for snacks.

Nodax coating can also be applied to foodservice articles such as cups, plates, and placemats. When it comes to disposal, Nodax is complimentary with composting of food waste. Its fast anaerobic degradability means these materials can be disposed of in marine or other low oxygen environments. The ideal market opportunities are found in closed loop environments such as theme park landfills, cruise and navy ships. 

NatureFlex is available in an uncoated form and in three different coated versions providing moisture and gas barrier performance, and is certified to EU and US standards for industrial and home composting. 

At present these materials are too expensive to be considered as viable alternatives to the commodity plastics in packaging but they do have potential applications in biomedical products such as orthopaedic implants and even as temporary replacements for parts of the pericardium during open-heart surgery. In this kind of application, performance is much more important than cost. However, Biopol may be able to replace non-biodegradable polymers in paper coating which would then allow paper composite materials to biodegrade much more rapidly in compost and similar environments.
