Data on fatal work injuries are from the Bureau of Labor Statistics Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI), 1995. This program, which has collected occupational fatality data nationwide since 1992, uses diverse data sources to identify, verify, and profile fatal work injuries. Information about each workplace fatality (occupation and other worker characteristics, equipment being used, and circumstances of the event) is obtained by cross-referencing source documents, such as death certificates, workers compensation records, and reports to Federal and State agencies. This method assures counts are as complete and accurate as possible. [Pg.10]

The point in the development program at which a patent application is filed will vary somewhat from company to company, but will normally he at an early stage in the process, when the substance has been made and been shown to be active in early screening. For a patent with a nominal term of 20 years from filing, the effective term during which the patentee has exclusive rights to a marketed product is only 8 to 12 years. This explains the importance attached by the pharmaceutical industry to provisions to extend the patent term, whether directly, as in United States and Japan, or indirectly by way of the supplementary protection certificate (SPC) in Europe, in order to compensate for this loss of effective patent term. It also explains the importance to the industry of the minimum 20-year term guaranteed by the... [Pg.55]

Investors in pharmaceutical research and development (R D) put up their money because they expect, on average, to get returns that adequately compensate them for the time and risk involved. Just as the interest rate on bank deposits is a payment for the use of depositors money (or capital), the return on an investment in R D is a payment the company or its investors get from the use of their capital. Riskier investments require higher dollar returns otherwise, investors would put their money in safe investments like U.S. Treasury bills or bank certificates of deposit. The riskier the investment, the higher the required return. The rate of return that investors must be able to expect from money invested with a given level of risk is referred to as the investment s cost of capital. ... [Pg.276]

For some organic products like nuts, coffee and cacao, the premiiuns linked to better quality have become more valuable than premiums paid for certification. Premiiuns for being certified are currently a reward for scarcity and, as certification becomes more common, these will likely transform into an aspect of competitive advantage and may be compensated only minimally or not at all. While many firms currently expect these premiums to continue, there is evidence that they are aheady shrinking. In the mid-1990s premiums for organic coffee could easily reach 100% and more. Today, premiums more typically range from 15% to 50%. [Pg.195]

Data for the CFOl are compiled from various federal, state, and local administrative sources, including death certificates, workers compensation reports and claims, reports to various regulatory agencies, medical examiner reports, police reports, and news reports. Source documents are matched so that each fatality is counted only once. To ensure that a fatality occurred while at work, all information is verified from two or more independent source documents or from a source document and a follow-up questionnaire. Approximately 30 data elements are collected, coded, and tabulated, including information about the worker, the fatal incident, and the machinery or equipment involved. This database does not give any descriptions of the accidents (types or causes). [Pg.517]

Because of the estimating procedure the National Safety Council statistics may undercount U.S. workplace fatalities. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) has also calculated worlq>lace fatality rates since the late 1930s but the scope of their survey has changed so dramatically that one cannot use the BLS data to identify a time trend. Nevertheless, the BLS s most recent data collection effort creates the most reliable source of information on fatal workplace accidents in the United States. 1 The BLS conducted a census of fatal occupational injuries for 1992 using data from death certificates, workers compensation claims, medical examiners records, autopsy reports, motor vehicle accident records, and OSH A and Mine Safety and Health Administration fatal injury reports. The BLS estimated Ae average worker in the United... [Pg.8]

Two teachers who act directly in these two workplaces participated in this research. For the assessment of occupational noise it was used a dosimeter of the Instrutherm brand, DOS-500 model, strictly calibrated by the CAL 3000 calibrator device, from the same vendor, and both with calibration certificate. Following the recommendations of NR-15 (Brasil 1978a), and considering the workplace as a continuous noise generator, the dosimeter was aet up for an A compensation circuit, SLOW response circuit, due to the characteristics of the noise in the environment rate of Exchange (duplicity) set to q = 5 and integration threshold at 80 dB (A). ... [Pg.238]
