Obtain conjugate and read the titer recommended by the commercial company. Make a dilution of approximately eight times that recommended for example, if the recommended dilution is 1/400, make up 1/500. A final volume of 1 mL (1000 pL) is needed in this stage. Thus, add 2 pL of conjugate to 1000 pL of PBS. An examination of the appropriate pipet to use with small volumes is required. Where there is no pipet to deliver 2 pL accurately, then a 5-pL vol can be used into the appropriate volume however, this does waste conjugate. Mix the conjugate solution without undue force.

Crude lecithins may be treated with acetone to obtain free-flowing powders with 95-98 percent AI. Lecithin can be additionally purified, bleached, fractionated, hydrogenated, hydrox-ylated, acetylated, sulfonated, and halo-genated.104 One domestic company makes 13 kinds of lecithin for food uses alone.

Because of the length and small diameter of capillary columns, there is increased interaction between the compounds in the mixture and the stationary phase. Capillary columns are, therefore, much more efficient in separating compounds with similar properties than with packed coliunns, but only if a dilute solution of a mixture of compounds is injected into the column. In order to obtain a satisfactory separation, you must dissolve about 1 drop of a mixture in about 2 mL of a solvent such as methylene chloride or pentane. About 1 fiL of this dilute sample is injected onto the coliunn. In contrast, 1 to 10 fiL of an undiluted sample can often be analyzed on a packed column without overloading the coliunn. These expensive capillary columns must be purchased from commercial companies specializing in their manufacture. Sensible researchers would never try to make their own capillary columns ... 

From this brief survey it is evident that the decision which a company makes about entering the business areas will be dependent upon many financial, legal and commercial considerations. It is equally evident that entry to the research-based pharmaceutical business can only be undertaken by a large company with vast resources which is prepared to take risks, wait a long time for profits and market its products in many countries. Since it is this sector of the pharmaceutical industry which generates new products and which is involved...
