Secondary literature

Publications of this kind are described as non-original. They are abstracting services and handbooks that catch the primary literature, condense the important contents, and make this information available (searchable). Secondary literature is not evaluated and is provided in both printable and electronic forms. Examples are Gmelin, Beilstein, Citations Chemisches Zentralblatt, Chemical Abstracts, or Science Citation Index handbooks include Houben-Weyl, and Landolt Bomstein. 

Extensive secondary literature coverage of fluonne NMR data is available for articles published through 1981 Massive amounts of fluonne data were comptled in penodic reviews in Annual Reports on NMR Spectroscopy [2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9] and in two volumes of Progress in NMR Spectroscopy [10, 11] Books wntten by Dungan and Van Wazer [12] and Moonev [13], both published in 1970, are still widely referenced today The majonty of %-NMR data compiled were from highly fluormated and perfluorinated compounds... 

The author index is compiled by computer from the lists of references. Thus it tells whose publications are cited and in that respect is comprehensive. It is not a list of authors, beyond those cited in the references, whose results are reported in the text. However, as the references cited are leading ones, consulting them, along with the use of appropriate works of the secondary literature, will rapidly lead to the complete literature related to any particular subject covered. 

In 1972 Walton et al. [32] modeled the drug literature as a pyramid with the primary literature forming the base of the pyramid, the secondary literature interfacing and serving as a bridge from the primary literature to reference works (tertiary literature). Reference works (tertiary literature) are the capstone of the pyramid and represent the smallest portion of the total literature volume. 

So if we want to know what Andreae is about, I think we need to go behind the secondary literature, which is often unreliable or inaccurate, and back to the primary sources to see what Andreae himself wrote. The problem is that these are often inaccessible - the texts are rare, and the language in which they are written is difficult. This page will try to help here by assembling relevant passages and putting them into their context...

Such conclusions (termination) can prevent economic losses or disasters with a minimum of capital outlay. The TOS comprises everything needed to improve on any inferior sampling process or procedure. The present chapter is but an introduction sufficient for the process analytical domain. The reader is also referred to the literature list and the secondary literature referenced herein. 

For obvious reasons, a very limited number of CSPs was examined, and although this selection is somewhat individual, an attempt has been made to cite key publications and secondary literature. The primary and secondary literature of NMR spectrometry is far too large to permit even a recapitulation here (I, 2). We will attempt no more than a very brief summary of the observable parameters and their significance. 

The practical guide presents an overview of current theories and results from the specialized literature in short concise text, tables and figures accompanied with references to important secondary literature. It contains just enough information for beginners to start with, but goes rapidly to the detailed information that advanced readers need. 

Although several comprehensive reviews have appeared on phosphabenzene5-8 i2-i4), Javier heterobenzenes 6,8,12,13 15) have been only modestly covered in the secondary literature. The present work attempts to review arsabenzene, stibabenzene and bismabenzene. Phosphabenzene and pyridine chemistry are only selectively treated for comparison.

Dr. Brouchard s research into asthma and diabetes services provided him with a great deal of information. The initial data he gathered from Internet searches and the primary and secondary literature showed him that each service had a great deal of potential. He visited other pharmacies in the Phoenix area that offer these services and came away impressed with the level of service that was being provided and the pharmacists willingness to share their ideas. 

A different kind of general treatment relates to source materials. It is very important, though often quite difficult, to know just what is available in the secondary literature. The best historical works have either full literary references in footnotes, or separate bibliographies or both. To some extent, it is hoped that the present book will meet that need, but other assistance is available. For example, a book published in... 

Soon after the patents cited above were issued, publications about the new types of corotating extruders and their applications began to appear in increasing numbers. The secondary literature also cites further publications [24 to 35] from the period between 1951 and 1974, many of which were authored by the licensors Bayer, i.e., predominantly R. Erdmenger and the licensee Werner und Pfleiderer, i.e., H. Herrmann. These publications increasingly pushed process engineering and the various uses of the co-rotating extruder. 

Reference lists are added at the end of each chapter reflecting the nature of the chapter being mainly a review or of a descriptive character. A comprehensive list of citations follows the large collection of diffusion coefficient values in Appendix I. In the first introductory chapter a list of useful secondary literature is given which contains many additional papers. Nevertheless, the authors are aware that many valuable references were not cited in this work. 

The following check list is recommended to assist authors in the measurement of adsorption isotherms and the presentation of the data in the primary literature. The reporting of results along generally accepted lines would considerably facilitate the compilation of data in the secondary literature and would thus promote interdisciplinary scientific cooperation [6]. 

Browsing the vast primary and secondary literature that deals with water or air treatment processes and technologies very quickly leads to a point of dissatisfaction and confusion concerning vague interpretations of experimental results, reaction mechanisms, or descriptions of reactor specifications. Because water and air are essential to our life, they are of special interest not only to researchers and engineers but also to economists and many others. Thus, extra-scientific considerations such as media attention are enormous. Many of these activities generate considerable confusion related to water and its treatment technologies, especially in the case of photochemical methods. 

In this book the literature is cited in a selective way. Only those articles in the primary literature (i.e., research journals) that have appeared since the preceding edition of the book was completed, 1988, and prior to the end of 1996 are cited. (A few references in 1997 are also included.) Even in this, there is no intention to be complete, but only to be reasonably helpful. References are also given to the secondary literature, that is, review journals. Primary literature references, even within the period 1988-1996 are sometimes intentionally omitted when there is a reference to the secondary literature that contains them. 

This article supplements previous accounts (1, 2) of the secondary literature describing transition metal organometallics, and summarizes, as far as is practicable, trends and advances in this area of chemical literature. Coverage includes journals received in the author s library up to the end of December 1972.
