Cola syrup

The caramelized liquid is sent by railroad tank cars to the cola syrup formulators, who then test the solution for quality. If it is too light in color—penalty if it has too many carbon particles per unit volume, then the whole tank car is rejected. There is thus a delicate balance between underreacting and overreacting. 

Locally-acting are all agents that decrease stimulation of receptors in the GI tract. A viscous formulation of local anesthetics such as lidocaine increases the threshold of receptor-activity to vomiting. Adsorbents and mucosa protective agents like kaolin and pectin, activated charcoal, bismuth subsalicylate, attapulgite and cholestyramine have similar effects. Cola Syrup and phosphorylated carbohydrate can decrease GI muscle spasm with consequently less input into the vomiting center.

It is true that when Coca-Cola was first produced in the mid-1880s it contained cocaine. In fact, the drink derives its name from its two medicinal ingredients — coca leaves and kola nuts. No one really knows how much cocaine Coca-Cola originally contained, but it certainly contained some. By 1902, the amount of cocaine in an ounce of Coca-Cola syrup was as little as 1/400 of a grain, and by 1905 all cocaine was eliminated from the beverage. 

Many of the chemicals used in this course will be unfamiliar to you. Their properties can be looked up in reference books, a very useful one being the Aldrich Catalog Handbook of Fine Chemicals. It is interesting to note that 1,4-dichlorobenzene is listed as a toxic irritant and naphthalene is listed as an irritant. Both are used as moth balls. Camphor, used in vaporizers, is classified as a flammable solid irritant. Salicylic acid, which we will use to synthesize aspirin (Chapter 26) is listed as moisture-sensitive toxic. Aspirin (acetylsalicyclic acid) is classified as an irritant. Caffeine, which we will isolate from tea or cola syrup (Chapter 8), is classified as toxic. Substances not so familiar to you—1-naphthol and benzoic acid—are classified respectively as toxic irritants and irritant. Automatic soft drink dispensing machines mix a syrup with carbonated water. In the following experiment caffeine is extracted from concentrated cola syrup.

COCA COLA SYRUP. In laboratory tests, Coca Cola syrup is corrosive to aluminum alloys. Unprotected aluminum is not ordinarily used with this product.
