In this regard, it is well to remember the role which the wall plays on the nature of the products obtained from gas phase oxidation. There is certainly common agreement that walls and wall reactions are important in this respect. For example, Hay et al. (11) have shown the importance of the walls in determining the nature and composition of the oxygenated products from 2-butane + 02 at 270°C. Cohens study on the photo-oxidation of acetone also illustrates this point (10). He found that if acetone is photolyzed by itself in a quartz vessel, the normal products—methane, ethane, carbon monoxide, and methyl ethyl ketone— are produced.

Cross-comparing the risks of various activities is difficult because of the lack of a common basis of comparison, however Cohen and Lee, 1979 provide such a comparison on the basis of loss of life expectancy. Solomon and Abraham, 1979 used an index of harm in a study of 6 occupational harms - three radiological and three nonradiological to bracket high and low estimates of radiological effects. The index of harm consists of a weighting factor for parametric study the lost time in an industry and the worker population at risk. The conclusions were that the data are too imprecise for firm conclusions but it is possible for a radiation worker under pessimistic health effects assumptions to have as high index of harm as the other industries compared. 

In addition to these are studies prepared before President Carter stopped the GESMO (Generic Environmental Statement for Mixed Oxide) that addressed the chemical processing of fissionable material for the nuclear fuel cycle. Some references are Cohen (1975), Schneider (1982), Erdmann (1979), Fuliwood (1980), and Fullwood (1983). 

Brandenberger and later, independently, Canellakis and Cohen, and Hartman and Fellig studied the course of the oxidation with uric acid specifically labeled with On the basis of their work they formulated the course of the oxidation as shown in Scheme 1.

A very similar effect of the surface concentration on the conformation of adsorbed macromolecules was observed by Cohen Stuart et al. [25] who studied the diffusion of the polystyrene latex particles in aqueous solutions of PEO by photon-correlation spectroscopy. The thickness of the hydrodynamic layer 8 (nm) calculated from the loss of the particle diffusivity was low at low coverage but showed a steep increase as the adsorbed amount exceeded a certain threshold. Concretely, 8 increased from 40 to 170 nm when the surface concentration of PEO rose from 1.0 to 1.5 mg/m2. This character of the dependence is consistent with the calculations made by the authors [25] according to the theory developed by Scheutjens and Fleer [10,12] which predicts a similar variation of the hydrodynamic layer thickness of adsorbed polymer with coverage. The dominant contribution to this thickness comes from long tails which extend far into the solution.

The regression-rate laws of the mixts at high and low pressures, the pressure limits for deflagration, and the structures of the combustion zone and of the surface were detd. The burning rate of various I-Al mixts, as a function of pressure, I particle size, and mixt ratio was determined by cinematography. The combustion was difficult to achieve... 

The proximity of the reaction centre to the second phenyl ring makes the aryl cation, formed by heterolytic dediazoniation, a serious competitor to the aryl radical. This is evident in Table 10-6 from various examples where the yield obtained in aqueous mineral acid (varying from 0.1 m to 50% H2S04) is higher than in the presence of an electron-transfer reagent. This competition was studied in three types of product analyses by Cohen s group (Lewin and Cohen, 1967 Cohen et al., 1977), by Huisgen and Zahler (1963 a, 1963 b), and by Bolton et al. (1986). 

Data gathered in the lessons were used to produce case studies for each of the groups of students because such case studies yield rich descriptions of events that are presented in a chronological narrative that incorporates the researcher s observations. Due to the possible inclusion of such an interpretation of the data, case studies go beyond simple descriptions of the situation and support the analysis of the phenomenon being studied (Cohen, Manion, Morrison, 2000). In order to discuss the research questions, we browsed the original case studies to identify evidence of how the students dealt with the levels of representation. Whenever it is appropriate, such evidence is included in the later sections of this chapter.
