Zirconium carbide is a highly refractory compound with excellent properties but, unlike titanium carbide, it has found only limited industrial importance except as coating for atomic-fuel particles (thoria and urania) for nuclear-fission power plants.l " ] This lack of applications may be due to its high price and difficulty in obtaining it free of impurities. 

Europium is used for the capture of thermal neutrons for nuclear control rods in atomic power stations. Thermal neutron absorption of the natural mixture of europium isotopes is 4,600 barns. While its salts are used in coatings for cathode ray tubes in color televisions, organoderivatives are used in NMR spectroscopy. 

Gadolinium oxide is used in control rods for neutron shielding in nuclear power reactors. It also is used in filament coatings, ceramics, special glasses and TV phosphor activator. The compound also is used as a catalyst. 

In order to qualify coatings for use in nuclear power plants, suppliers must prepare test specimens of the candidate systems and submit them to test agencies having equipment that can simulate Class 1 and 2 conditions. The Oak Ridge National Laboratories in Oak Ridge, Tennessee is one agency used by most suppliers.

Silicic acid is not attacked by radiation, and silicate esters are therefore particularly suitable binders for coatings in radiation-hazard areas such as nuclear power stations. 

Epoxy resins cured with aminoamide resins or amine adducts are often used for large metal constructions. Paints based on these resins are normally applied in four layers. Epoxy coatings form films that are resistant to organic solvents and a wide range of chemicals. Epoxy coatings are currently used for the majority of steel and aluminum constructions, but are also suitable for use on other construction materials (e.g., concrete). They can protect buildings in chemical plants and nuclear power...
