Cellulose (Figure 8.19) may be extracted from wood pulp, and is usually partially hydrolysed with acid to give microcrystalline cellulose. These materials are used as tablet diluents. Semi-synthetic derivatives of cellulose, e.g. methylcellulose, hydroxymethylcellulose, and carboxymethylcellulose, are used as emulsifying and suspending agents. Cellulose acetate phthalate is cellulose with about half the hydroxyl groups acetylated, and the remainder esterified with phthalic acid. It is used as an acid-resistant enteric coating for tablets and capsules.

Most of the acetic acid is produced in the United States, Germany, Great Britain, Japan, France, Canada, and Mexico. Total annual production in these countries is close to four million tons. Uses include the manufacture of vinyl acetate [108-05-4] and acetic anhydride [108-24-7]. Vinyl acetate is used to make latex emulsion resins for paints, adhesives, paper coatings, and textile finishing agents. Acetic anhydride is used in making cellulose acetate fibers, cigarette filter tow, and ceUulosic plastics.

Starch esters are thermoplastic materials with properties that are somewhat similar to that of cellulose esters. In particular, starch acetate (DS < 0.2) is used as a coating agent for paper and as a food or detergent additive. 

The Dylux 503 formulation contained a HABI, the leucodye TLA-454, a mixture of quinones, triethanolamine triacetate, several plasticizers, an organic acid, cellulose acetate butyrate binders, as well as antiblocking agents (fluorinated derivatives) as well as a silica derivative to provide tooth to the coating. The selection was made to provide maximum performance at minimum mill cost. The paper substrate required had high holdout, so as to permit two-sided coatings as well as to minimize the wicking of chemistry into the base.
