A number of other valuable aroma chemicals can be isolated from essential oils, eg, eugenol from clove leaf oil, which can also, on treatment with strong caustic, be isomerked to isoeugenol, which on further chemical treatment can be converted to vanillin (qv). Sometimes the naturally occurring component does not requke prior isolation or concentration, as in the case of cinnamaldehyde in cassia oil which, on dkect treatment of the oil by a retro-aldol reaction, yields natural ben2aldehyde (qv). This product is purified by physical means. [Pg.297]

C10H12O2, Mr 164.20, pi.3kPa 121 °C, df 1.0652, ng 1.5409, is the main component of several essential oils clove leaf oil and cinnamon leaf oil may contain >90%. Eugenol occurs in small amounts in many other essential oils. It is a colorless to slightly yellow liquid with a spicy, clove odor. [Pg.130]

Clove leaf oil is obtained in 2-3% yield by steam distillation of the leaves of the above-mentioned. [Pg.190]

While it is true that materials of identical chemical structure have the same odor qualities and are indistinguishable in their effect upon the skin irrespective of their origin, it is also true that very often synthetic and natural perfume materials that have the same name are not really identical in the chemical sense. Rhodinol from geranium oil consists of a different mixture of optical isomers than synthetic rhodinol. Eugenol from clove leaf oil is accompanied by different impurities than synthetic eugenol. Hence the natural and synthetic materials do differ in their odor quality, and they may differ in their effects upon the skin. [Pg.192]

Clove Leaf Oil occurs as a pale yellow liquid with a sharp, spicy, peppery odor and taste. It is the volatile oil obtained by steam distillation of the leaves of Eugenia caryophyllata Thunberg (Eugenia aromatica L. Baill.) (Fam. Myrtaceae). It is soluble in propylene glycol and in most fixed oils with slight opalescence, and it is relatively insoluble in glycerin and in mineral oil. [Pg.116]

Oakmoss is a sort of lichen that grows on oak trees, and its extract has an important role in fragrance design.101 Cinnamon oil is obtained from the bark of the cinnamon tree, although small-scale production of leaf oil is also known. Cassia oil is obtained from the bark, small branches, and leaves of the Cassia tree. Clove oil is prepared by steam distillation of clove buds, while clove leaf oil is made from leaves (Table 11). [Pg.608]

The odor is powerful, warm-spicy, rather dry and almost sharp, drier and harder than that of clove bud oil, less peppery-woody than that of clove leaf oil (Arctander, 1967). An odor threshold of 6ppb in water was given by Buttery et al. (1971). [Pg.200]

Clove oils. C. are mainly produced by steam distillation of the various parts of the clove tree Syzygium aromaticum (Myrtaceae) predominantly cultivated in Madagascar and Indonesia. Clove flower oil has the highest organoleptic value, while clove leaf oil is the quantitatively most important oil. The world-wide annual production of C. amounts to 2000 to 30001. [Pg.142]

Clove leaf oil The crude oil is a dark brown to lilac brown, somewhat viscous liquid with a medical-phenolic, rough, burnt taste. For use in perfumes or flavors the crude oil is usually rectified to furnish a clear, yellow to light brown mobile liquid with a less burnt, sweet-spicy taste which is more dry-woody than the flower oil. It is produced from the leaves. Composition Like the flower oil, the leaf oil contains eugenol (ca. 85%) and caryophyllene (ca. 10% or more) as major components, but hardly any eugenyl acetate. [Pg.142]

Use Mainly in the perfume industry for herby-spicy compositions. The main portion of clove leaf oil is distilled to furnish pure eugenol which is also used as a component of perfumes or is transformed into other fragrance compounds (e.g., isoeugenol). Caryophyl-lene obtained as a by-product is also employed as a precursor of fragrance substances. [Pg.142]

This is a very simple method to stretch. Clove leaves are easier to harvest and bring similar oil as the stem or bud oil. Clove bud oil is nearly three times higher in price than clove leaf oil. Therewith the concocting of that oil makes sense. Pimento berry oil and leaf oil are closely related in composition. The price of the berry oil is double the leaf oil consequently, adulteration is interesting. By GC-MS method and regarding minor components, this immixture will be detected. Eucalyptus oil from China is derived from Cinnamomum longepaniculatum (Gamble) 1,8-cineole type. Either the whole oil sold as eucalyptus oil or Eucalyptus sp. added is clearly not allowed and must be seen as adulteration. [Pg.718]

ISO standard 3524 shows character and data for this oil. As eugenol is the main component, recti-ed clove leaf oil or isolated eugenol from this oil is used. Also p-caryophyllene, synthetic benzyl benzoate, and trani-cinnamaldehyde are added. Blending is done by a-terpineol. Casabianca (1998) reported the ratio of (/ )-(-)-linalool and (5)-(+)-linalool to be 64.0% and 36.0%, respectively. [Pg.731]

ISO standard 3061 shows character and data for this oU. Blending is done with turpentine oil, a phellandrene from other sources, limonene from orange terpenes, and clove leaf oil terpenes. The chiral ratio of linalool is (/ ) ( ) 81.0% 89.0% and (5) (+) 11.0% 19.0% found by Casablanca (1996a). Konig et al. (1992) reported the following chiral ratios (+) a thujene 100% (-)-a-thujene 0% ( ) a pinene 74.6% (+) a pinene 25.4% () camphene 66.6% (+)-camphene 33.4% ... [Pg.738]

Some essential oils are produced for their chemical constituents, whereas most are produced for their aromatic parts, and it is important that suppliers understand what is expected of them by their customer, whether it is chemical constituents naturally occurring or it is the aroma and avor. Examples of this are turpentine oil, Litsea cubeba oil, sassafras oil, clove leaf oil, and coriander oil. [Pg.1036]
