A classic example of a clarification process used in Brazil is that of ethanol production by yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The viability of ethanol production is based on the efficiency of the clarifying operation, which depends on the recycling of yeast to the fermentation reactor and, consequently, the maintenance of high cell concentrations in the culture medium. " Another relevant aspect for the appropriate process performance is the selectivity afforded by centrifugation, keeping bacteria in suspension while yeasts and other larger solids can sediment. The separation occurs due to the density difference between bacteria and yeast, the latter being removed from the supernatant due to their lower density. The partial removal of bacteria, the main contaminant, is a fundamental factor for an effective fermentation. ... [Pg.54]

Most of the above apphcations are in clarification duties. The use of HGMS to dewater relatively concentrated, paramagnetic mineral slurries has been demonstrated on 2 to 12 wt % feed concentration of synthetic malachite (7) concentrated to 40%. The magnetic collection was optimized at flow velocities of 1 mm/s, and product concentrations greater than 40% were not possible unless the collected material could be removed from the matrix with less than the equivalent of one canister of washwater. [Pg.391]

The homogenize must be placed appropriately ia the system to assure the proper temperature of the incoming product, provide for clarification, and avoid air iacorporation that would cause excessive foaming. The homogenize also maybe used as a pump ia the pasteurization circuit. [Pg.354]

RO, primarily used ia the dairy iadustry, is expanding iato other areas of food processiag. RO can be used for a variety of operations, ranging from wastewater treatment and material recovery to clarification and concentration. Material recovery is advantageous for two reasons. By recovering valuable products, eg, proteias, from waste streams, profits can be iacreased while costs for waste disposal decreased. An excellent review of the different apphcations ofRO ia food processiag is available (9). [Pg.155]

Cake Filters - These are filters that are used to remove large amounts of solids from a slurry solution. They would normally be seen in biotechnology in the primary clarification of fermentation batches and in a variety of solids removal steps seen in the production of drugs via organic synthesis. [Pg.185]

The solid-liquid separation of shinies containing particles below 10 pm is difficult by conventional filtration techniques. A conventional approach would be to use a slurry thickener in which the formation of a filter cake is restricted and the product is discharged continuously as concentrated slurry. Such filters use filter cloths as the filtration medium and are limited to concentrating particles above 5 xm in size. Dead end membrane microfiltration, in which the particle-containing fluid is pumped directly through a polymeric membrane, is used for the industrial clarification and sterilisation of liquids. Such process allows the removal of particles down to 0.1 xm or less, but is only suitable for feeds containing very low concentrations of particles as otherwise the membrane becomes too rapidly clogged.2,4,8... [Pg.362]

Experiments investigated the integration of cell disruption by bead milling and product capmre by fluidised bed adsorption. By using fluidised bed adsorption, the clarification of the broth would be incorporated with the capture of the product which would result in a considerably... [Pg.413]

The activities of pectic enzymes present in cultivation medium (98 mg of protein extracted from 2.5 1 of pectin medium) were poor, not leading to the clarification of cultivation medium indicating the cleavage of pectate chains, with values 0.024 pmol/min.mg for polygalacturonase, 0.004 pmol/min.mg for exopolygalacturonase, 0.034 pmol/min.mg for pectinesterase and 0.005 pmol/min.mg for pectin lyase. The production of individual pectic enzymes was dependent on the C-source used in the cultivation medium (Tab. 1). [Pg.902]

Complementary to the passage, one can also consider the retention of a component as R = 1 - S (also called rejection). Retention can also be either an observed or an intrinsic measurement. Retention is useful in considering retained products during concentration mode operation. Other component separation characterizations include the log reduction value LRV =- logS which is used to characterize high-efficiency separations with permeate products (sterilization). The beta ratio P = I/S is sometimes used in NFF for clarification applications. [Pg.37]

Regardless of the location of the protein and its state, cell separation needs to be inemensive, simple, and reliable, as large amounts of fermentation-broth dilute in the desired product may be handled. The objectives are to obtain a well-clarified supernatant and solids of maximum dryness, avoiding contamination by using a contained operation. Centrifugation or crossflow filtration is t ically used for cell separation, and both unit operations can be run in a continuous-flow mode [Datar and Rosen, in Stephanopoulos (ed.), op. cit., pp. 369-503]. In recent years, e3q>anded-bea adsorption has become an alternative. It combines broth clarification and adsorption separation in a single step. [Pg.73]

This plant produces 130 m2/h of enameled steel and operates 3500 h/yr. It uses 0.0036 m3 water/m2 of product to coat the steel. Average process water flow is 0.144 m3/h for coating operations and 0.734 m3/h for metal preparation. The primary treatment in-place for process wastewater is clarification and settling. Other water treatment practices employed are pH adjustment with lime or acid, sludge applied to landfill, polyelectrolyte coagulation, and inorganic coagulation. [Pg.321]
