There have been a number of cell designs tested for this reaction. Undivided cells using sodium bromide electrolyte have been tried (see, for example. Ref. 29). These have had electrode shapes for in-ceU propylene absorption into the electrolyte. The chief advantages of the electrochemical route to propylene oxide are elimination of the need for chlorine and lime, as well as avoidance of calcium chloride disposal (see Calcium compounds, calcium CHLORIDE Lime and limestone). An indirect electrochemical approach meeting these same objectives employs the chlorine produced at the anode of a membrane cell for preparing the propylene chlorohydrin external to the electrolysis system. The caustic made at the cathode is used to convert the chlorohydrin to propylene oxide, reforming a NaCl solution which is recycled. Attractive economics are claimed for this combined chlor-alkali electrolysis and propylene oxide manufacture (135). 

Different manufacturers have adopted different methods with minor changes to achieve almost the same objective. The plant engineer should strive to make sure that, whenever possible, his purchase orders specify compliance with the correct standard. Many manufacturers can tmthfully claim that their specifications exceed the minimum requirements of a material standard, in which case they will have no objection to its inclusion in the order. Those who protest too much that its requirements are superfluous may deserve further scmtiny. Choosing the correct specification is not always easy, and requires expertise in the relevant field. This expertise is available from consulting engineers or from an inspection authority, who will also appraise the vendor s designs and, if required, will witness critical stages of constmction and test. 

There are no objective tests which will enable one to tell at what point mishandling in storage took place. The packer who fails to keep a record of the quality and condition of his product as it is placed in storage, of the storage conditions, and of product condition as it is loaded for shipment is exposing himself to unnecessary risk. Without such records he may find himself unable to refute unjust or misdirected claims initiated by the buyer.

Apparently there are psychiatrist and nonpsychiatrist clinicians whose experience convinces them that MDMA can have therapeutic uses, mainly as an adjunct to psychotherapy. Despite these convictions, there appear to be no published data to support these claims. There is an urgent need for objective data from well-controlled, blinded clinical studies, if these claims of therapeutic usefulness are to be taken seriously. If a bona fide use is evident, then it may be possible to produce other drugs with the same desirable action, lacking the toxicity inherent in MDMA. 

Direct search methods use only function evaluations. They search for the minimum of an objective function without calculating derivatives analytically or numerically. Direct methods are based upon heuristic rules which make no a priori assumptions about the objective function. They tend to have much poorer convergence rates than gradient methods when applied to smooth functions.
