Unnecessary risks

There are no objective tests which will enable one to tell at what point mishandling in storage took place. The packer who fails to keep a record of the quality and condition of his product as it is placed in storage, of the storage conditions, and of product condition as it is loaded for shipment is exposing himself to unnecessary risk. Without such records he may find himself unable to refute unjust or misdirected claims initiated by the buyer. [Pg.34]

Taking unnecessary risks may place you and other people in danger. However, see answer 27 above. [Pg.92]

The treatment staff must be aware of countertransference issues, and anticipate relapses and failures. For both patient and staff, it helps to define and accept limited goals. Appropriate security measures are necessary, so that staff can feel safe also, staff need to be educated about not taking unnecessary risks in handling these patients. Staff frustration has to be recognized and managed. [Pg.272]

This consists of high-risk aversion-low-risk perception consumers. The conservative segment is composed of cautious, risk-averse consumers who do not take any unnecessary risks. They can also be seen as being the silent majority in many ways (Miller, 1985). [Pg.123]

Individuals who can only derive minimal, if any, benefit from a drug will no longer be given a prescription for that drug and therefore they will not be put at unnecessary risk of an adverse event. [Pg.59]

Telescope mirrors are silvered by prepg a soln of K hydroxide and Ag nitrate ammonia and covering the mirror with it. Unless the prepn steps ace followed carefully, SF may form which is very expl. Fof this reason the USBurStds recommends that goggles be worn to avoid an unnecessary risk. The risk is especially great if the "silvering" soln is kept for more than several hours. [Pg.606]

As reviewed and emphasized in Chapter 3, the physical and the pharmacokinetic properties of various psychotropics, including the BZDs, often have clinically relevant implications. This realization can serve to enhance efficacy and/or minimize adverse effects. Thus, while ignorance of these properties may put patients at unnecessary risk, a working knowledge of these issues can often produce an ideal clinical outcome. [Pg.242]

This situation provided the opportunity for the decision maker to consider many other factors when the control decision was made. The predominant factors driving the control decision were judgmental and unquantifiable. They included the essentiality of the disinfection process in the control of waterborne disease (which is a large risk), the desire to optimize drinking water quality so as to avoid unnecessary risks, and the consideration of the unique compliance problems of small underfinanced and marginally operated water systems. Ultimately, the decision was driven by the feasibility and costs of treatment process improvements. [Pg.697]

On an individual level, one can avoid some unnecessary risks (i.e., someone may never go swimming... [Pg.491]

When we put in a hard day s work, we want to be assured that we aren t being exposed to any unnecessary risks. Let s face it, at the end of our shift we all want to return safely to our homes in good health. Those working with radioactive materials therefore need to follow a few simple guidelines to help protect themselves from potential dangers. First and foremost, we must have a healthy respect for radioactive materials and radiation. Note that respect is different than fear. This respect will ensure that we do not get careless or complacent in our day-to-day activities. Secondly, we must maintain our exposure to radioactive materials in accordance with the ALARA principle. That is, we must maintain our exposure as low as reasonably achievable. Thirdly, three words will help enforce the... [Pg.383]

Clinical protocols and investigator information—detailed protocols for proposed clinical studies to assess whether the initial-phase trials will expose subjects to unnecessary risks. Also, information on the qualifications of clinical investigators—professionals (generally physicians) who oversee the administration of the experimental compound—to assess whether they are qualified to fulfill their clinical trial duties finally, commitments to obtain informed consent from the research subjects, to obtain review of the study by an IRB, and to adhere to the IND regulations. [Pg.92]

Although oral corticosteroids have had an established use in herpes zoster treatment, their value has become controversial. They are clearly contraindicated in HIV and while the virus is still present in immunocompetent patients. Some authors report increased quality of life and decreased acute pain with oral steroid use in the elderly, but this value is offset by potential risk. Significant relief may be obtained with early antiviral therapy so that oral steroids are an unnecessary risk. Oral steroids are of no value in preventing PHN as was previously believed. The duration of PHN, however, is significantly shortened by early and aggressive use of oral antiviral agents in the acute phase of herpes zoster. Tricyclic antidepressants may also be useful when prescribed at the time of acute... [Pg.395]

But in this case, why the feeling of fright. Especially since this is probably the thousandth time you ve read about a murder in the newspaper. You long ago put your life in reasonable order so there were no clear unnecessary risks. Why do you continue to read stories about murders in distant towns anyway, when you know that they frighten you. ... [Pg.100]

It seems an obvious truth that unnecessary risks should be avoided, but there is disagreement on what risks are truly unnecessary and, on looking closely at the matter, it is plain that many people habitually take risks in their daily and recreational life that it would be a misuse of words to describe as necessary. [Pg.7]

The use of antimicrobial agents for relatively trivial infections encourages the selection of resistant organisms. Consequently, in the absence of evidence of a susceptible pathogen, antimicrobial use is irrational and may expose treated horses to unnecessary risks. [Pg.17]

The IND review is unique among the FDA s application review processes. In many respects, this process and the FDA s treatment of INDs represents a delicate balance between the federal government s responsibility to protect clinical trial subjects from unnecessary risks and its desire to avoid becoming an impediment to the advance of medical research. Given these dual goals, the FDA must perform a safety review of an IND prior to clinical trials, but has only 30 days in which to reach an initial determination on the filing. [Pg.835]

Clinical Review. The reviewing medical officer, who is generally a physician, evaluates the clinical protocols to ensure (1) that subjects will not be exposed to unreasonable or unnecessary risks during clinical triads and (2) that Phase 2 and Phase 3 trials (generally not submitted in the initial IND filing) are adequate in design to provide scientifically valid data. [Pg.835]

See Chapter 31 for more information on the risks of treating the neck with phenol. The increased absorption area also carries an additional and unnecessary risk of toxicity for the patient. [Pg.282]
